"...I've felt better on my knees since I'm going to this doctor, so I'm happy" Said Lorraine, sighing contently.
"That's great, grandma".
Bianca was talking with her grandma through the Principal's secretary's phone. At the background she could hear on the news something about Hurricane Ivan getting closer to the United States, but at least wasn't near to where she and her grandma lived.
The girl was happy Mr. Hamington was taking care of her economically, but her head was still wrapped about what that cruel, aggressive warlock told her; some awful lie about her mother being his father's wh*re. Just replaying his words on her head made her want to cry in rage.
"Grandma, you've always been honest with me...".
Sometimes too honest, Bianca cringed.
"Yes, beautiful Bianca, always".
"The truth is, one of Mr. Zachary's sons said something terrible about mom".
She didn't want to dwell too much in this monster's blatant lie, but the girl still had a minuscule thorn of doubt in her heart. What if Zachary's help lied in bad intentions after all?
"What did he say? For god's sake, tell me".
Bianca ignored how gossipy her grandma sounded and looked at both of her sides to check if there wasn't any intruder hearing them, then quietly confessed as if it was some forbidden demonic spell "he said mom was Zachary's lover and that's why he helps us".
"Mmm..."
"So... Is it true?"
"Mmm..."
"Grandma, say something!".
"Okay, okay! There's some truth about it, but not to the extent of saying they were lovers. How ridiculous!".
"What's that 'truth' about?".
"Well, don't tell anybody this, but Mr. Zachary used to have a crush on your mother".
Bianca was shaking her head at her grandma's childishness, until she heard the last part. Mr. Zachary had a crush on her mom!? That overly serious, demanding man, fancied her airheaded, non-strings-attached mother?
"Seriously!?".
"Yeah, but the fool never reciprocated: she said she didn't find white guys attractive, despite reminding her he was richer, and smarter. Look how that ended because she didn't listen to me".
Truth was, she doesn't find attractive most white guys either, but that wasn't important right now. Bianca wasn't surprised at her grandma's greed, but for once she wished her mom listened to her. At least Mr. Hamington wasn't a lunatic cheater.
"So, they never had anything? I mean, between mom and Mr. Zachary".
"No, never. I would've known; but maybe Zachary's crush on her never died and that's why he's helping us, we might never know".
The call ended with her grandmother dismissing her worries, telling her not to listen to other people's silliness, and asking her to take and send some pictures of Switzerland; she was curious about how was the place her granddaughter was staying.
Bianca felt less uneasy with her grandma's words, but still was scared of the recent events. Or scared of certain person, more precisely: how easily he handed her like a rag doll, and his threat of breaking her face if she stuck to Alexander's side; no thanks! he was an assh*le and wasn't even her friend anyway.
The girl went to one of her last training sessions before the exam, and after a while Dereck frowned when he noticed the bruise on her arm.
"What happened to you?" He pointed at the nasty bruise.
His first thought was that she had an accident practicing for the exam by herself, so he didn't worry too much.
"I had a little 'encounter' with a warlock from the Honored Disciple's Academy" She admitted, not in the mood to make up a lie.
As soon as she heard about the Honored Disciple's Academy, she knew they were trouble but didn't mind too much because they wouldn't show up here, right? Wrong, out of the blue that warlock was in front of her, like a freaking demon.
At seeing Dereck's visible worry, she couldn't help but explain to him what happened, excluding some details to not divulge her own privacy.
"That's so unfair, but I don't think teachers here will do something to protect you" He said, sadly "School district representatives adore students from that academy, and they'll defend him no matter what".
"I don't want them to get involved either".
"For now, stay away from that brother of his: he seems like a douchebag".
"He is a douchebag".
"Right. Did you go to the infirmary to treat that?".
At Bianca's negative response, they both went to the infirmary and the nurse applied a medicine over it after cooling it with an ice bag. Dereck didn't want to continue with the training in fear of worsening the bruise but Bianca insisted, so they practiced.
Also, the girl said there wouldn't be any more trainings before the exam so Dereck could have time to practice for his despite his protests. She knew she was stealing a lot of his time to get prepared himself, and she felt guilty for that.
The next couple of days, Bianca avoided Alexander and his friends like the plague. It was partly easy because those lazy air-heads were on their room or the entertainment room after school hours, but the tricky part was during recess and lunch time. She'd quickly run and take her food from the cafeteria, and eat her meals outside.
She'd sneak glances at Alexander and his friends, and felt rage at seeing them talking and laughing like nothing. It hurt her a little, but she wouldn't let anyone see her sadness and loneliness. Not that it bothered her not having friends, but the fact of having to hide from an idiot in fear of being harmed was the problem.
The good news was she passed the first exam of Fighting Concepts, which made her really glad and couldn't stop herself from telling Dereck.
"I passed! I passed!" She happily told him.
"Wow, congrats. How much did you get?".
"Seven point five".
The school managed a numerical grade system from 0 to 10, in which 6 was the minimum passing grade.
"What a relief!" Dereck said, sighing.
"Thank you so much! I don't know how to really thank you enough".
Not only was Bianca happy, but she also felt very optimistic. She wasn't so worthless after all.
"Eh... I was thinking about something you can do for me, but I don't know how to say it without sounding corny".
Dereck looked strangely nervous, playing with his fingers and staring elsewhere.
"What? Just say it".
"This is embarrassing...".
The boy cleared his throat, making Bianca smile. In her eyes he was really lovely despite being a warlock.
"Would you be… my friend? I mean, not like my friend right away, just spending time together and getting to know each other first?".
Yeah, he was lovely. A tinge of distrust still resonated inside Bianca, but training with him for days made her more comfortable with him than not.
"Sure. Let's be potential friends".
