I sliced a baguette and drizzled oil, vinegar and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes into a dish while Miri poured filtered water into a pair of wine glasses. We spread our feast out on the coffee table and dug into the stew.

“How does he do it? This is the mildest beef I’ve ever tasted.”

I smirked into my cup, knowing Miri would never be able to get the idea of eating Thumper out of her head. We finished the stew in silence, me hoping the moment of discussion would never come, Miri maybe giving me the time she thought I needed. Thing is, I’d never be ready for this conversation. There was never a good time for admitting your shame to the girl you loved. The girl who was way too good for you.

But I couldn’t put it off forever.

I set my cup and spoon down, took a deep breath. “Miri, I -”

“Here.” She picked up an éclair and held it up to my mouth. “Take a bite first.”

I quirked an eyebrow and took a bite of Phillipe’s brand of heaven.
