章節 40: Chapter 40 (edited)

Unknowingly, a year had passed since Kara started working at the Daily Planet.

In total, it had been four years since she began her journey circling the globe.

This past year had been relatively calm and uneventful. While the Daily Planet often reported on Superman's deeds, the newspaper had its own distinct columns and news sources that drew in readers. Among these, Kara's column had gradually become one of the publication's biggest selling points.

Her work had garnered a devoted fanbase, with some even camping outside the Daily Planet offices, eagerly hoping she would write more. Her vivid portrayals of the world's beauty were utterly captivating.

In one column, she described sitting atop the Arctic glaciers, capturing the heartwarming sight of a mother polar bear guiding her cubs in search of food beneath the dazzling northern lights. She included breathtaking photos of the auroras and a particularly endearing shot of the polar bear family.

That piece alone sparked a surge of interest in viewing the northern lights. However, since traveling to the North Pole was both dangerous and costly, Kara thoughtfully listed safer alternatives for her readers.

Another memorable article detailed her ascent of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. She vividly described the snow-covered slopes and the surreal sensation of touching the clouds at its summit. Her candid reflections and stunning photographs captivated readers, inspiring awe and admiration.

For Kara, this year had been fulfilling to the point that she almost forgot about her other identity. Immersed in her work, she thrived as a writer, earning recognition and royalties. She was soon set to officially sign a contract with the Daily Planet, marking another milestone in her career.

Amidst her professional success, Kara ensured she took one day off each week. Sometimes, she would visit Smallville to spend time with her adoptive parents, mindful that Clark's departure for university might leave them feeling lonely.

Other times, she spent her day off at her apartment, resting or catching up with her closest friends, Dani and Jennifer. Their bond had strengthened over the year, and they often met for drinks or simply to unwind. Kara also noticed both women had become more adept at self-defense, minimizing the need for her to intervene when they faced unwelcome advances during nights out.

Clark's acceptance into Metropolis University brought another wave of excitement. Kara eagerly anticipated his arrival, even considering having him stay at her apartment rather than the dorms.

However, one day, an unexpected piece of news disrupted her peaceful rhythm: Bruce Wayne, who had been missing for seven years and was presumed dead, announced his return.

The news dominated the headlines across Metropolis, and by afternoon, it was featured prominently in the Daily Planet.

For Kara, however, it wasn't a surprise. Bruce had called her the previous night, casually informing her of his plans. Her response was a succinct, "You're insane," before ending the call.

She thought little of it afterward, dismissing the announcement as irrelevant to her life. They were merely acquaintances, exchanging occasional calls and messages, not close enough to warrant congratulations.

But that same day, as Kara was about to leave work, the new editor-in-chief, Perry White, called her into his office.

Over the past year, Perry had risen to prominence within the paper, eventually becoming editor-in-chief after his predecessor retired. While Kara initially doubted his qualifications, she later learned of his significant contributions, including discovering talented journalists and fostering the paper's growth.

"Take a seat," Perry said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. Kara rolled her eyes as she plopped down, already suspecting the purpose of the meeting.

"How's next week's column coming along?" Perry asked with a grin. "I'd love a sneak peek—I'm a big fan of your work, you know."

Kara gave him a wry smile. "I just submitted this week's article yesterday, and now you want next week's? Do you think I write articles every day?"

She narrowed her eyes, adjusting her glasses as she leaned forward. "Let's cut to the chase, Perry. What do you really want?"

Perry sighed, realizing there was no point in beating around the bush. "Alright, fine. Bruce Wayne's return is the talk of the town, and I want the Daily Planet to have an exclusive interview. Since you've known him since college, I thought you'd be the perfect candidate."

Kara groaned, leaning back in her chair. "You want me to go to Gotham? Absolutely not. That place is a nightmare."

Perry leaned forward, his expression pleading. "Come on, Kara. You're the only one he might actually talk to. This could be huge for the paper—and for you."

But Kara was unwavering. "I'm not going to Gotham, Perry. Find someone else."
