Chapter four:
Oh no you don't! No way! Said Lex Luthor.
Scarecrow knelt down beside Brock to administer the antidote to his toxin, as Lex Luthor vented.
I refuse to work with you Gotham villains! Lex Luthor roared. You psychoses makes you unpredictable, and you have a habit of stabbing people in the back... metaphorically and literally! Replied Lex Luthor.
I take offence to that, Luthor, sneered Scarecrow, rising to his feet as Brock lay twitching at his feet. I am nothing like the rest of them.
Oh, please! Replied Lex Luthor.
It's true, Scarecrow said, as he walked towards Lex Luthor's desk. What the doctors of Arkham consider instantly is merely a strong passion for my research into the power of fear.
Right... said Lex Luthor sarcastically. And the Joker just wants to make people laugh...
Oh, you can't tar us all with the same brush as him, even the rest of Gothamites can't bear that deranged clown! Replied Scarecrow.
Scarecrow placed his hands upon Lex Luthor's desk as he reached it, Mercy recolling in disgust as he did.
Besides... unlike him I have no qualms in working with those of greater power... it tends to bear the greatest fruit. Said Scarecrow.
And what fruit do you hope to gain from this? Said Lex Luthor. Money? Notoriety?
Proof. Replied Scarecrow.
Proof? Of what? Said Lex Luthor.
Proof in my research, replied Scarecrow. Proof of the overwhelming influence that our fear's have in how we think, act and live.
Wait... said Mercy Graves, taking a slow step forwards. You want to use your fear toxins on Eradicator?
Scarecrow turned slowly towards Mercy Graves, who stepped back again.
A ridiculous notion, said Lex Luthor, as Scarecrow turned back to him. As if she would have any fear's!
Why wouldn't she? Fear motivates everyone even someone as powerful as her. Replied Scarecrow.
Lex Luthor rolled her eyes as he turned his back to him.
Think of it this way, how many times have you tried to get Eradicator by kidnapping Jimmy Olsen? Don't you think this fear of losing him is what motivated her to fight for him? Said Scarecrow.
He has a point. Replied Mercy Graves.
Lex Luthor glanced at Mercy Graves, before turning to face Scarecrow again.
Ok, so Eradicator has fear's... but how does that help me turn Metropolis against her? Said Lex Luthor.
Think back to those times that Eradicator has confronted you, said Scarecrow. How would you describe her behavior?
How do you think? Roared Lex Luthor, slamming his fist on his desk. Arrogant, cocky, self righteous.
Angry? Replied Scarecrow.
Yes, of course, she was angry! What of it?! Said Lex Luthor.
Don't you see? Eradicator's fear manifests itself as anger, most likely due to the powers she possesses and her constant need to play the unbeatable vigilante. Replied Scarecrow.
I'm losing patience here, Scarecrow what's your point? Demanded Lex Luthor.
My point is that all you have to do to turn Metropolis against her, is get her so scared, so angry, that she becomes an unstoppable, and destructive force of power. Replied Scarecrow.
And how do you purpose we do that? Said Lex Luthor.
Well... I trust you remember Darkseid's invasion? Replied Scarecrow.
Who doesn't...? Muttered Mercy Graves.
Well, said Scarecrow loudly as he turned and walked away from the desk. Then you'll remember how dark a day that was. Here was a powerful alien overlord, his power and presence greater than that of any evil before him, and everyone knew it... including Eradicator.
Scarecrow turned to Lex Luthor, and marched towards him.
See, I watched the news from my comfy Arkham cell, and I read her body language and behaviors. The influence of fear was overpowering, she was so scared that day, the most scared she had ever been in her life. Said Scarecrow.
Scared of what? Asked Lex Luthor, with sincere interest.
Of losing, replied Scarecrow simply. Darkseid was easily the most powerful enemy she had ever faced, and there was the very real possibility that she die that day, along with everyone on this planet. Eradicator was afraid of that possibility, of failing the planet she had sworn to protect.
And it was that fear that forced her to use all of her strength to fight Darkseid... Said Lex Luthor.
Exactly! Said Scarecrow. So, if we can just get her to relive that day, or better yet, make her believe that it actually has happened...
Oh, she would be furious! Said Lex Luthor, with sinister glee. All the anger, she could easily tear the city apart!
As Scarecrow, chuckled realization hit Lex Luthor, and his smile faded.
But wait... even if that does turn them against her, how does that help me get back on top? Said Lex Luthor.
Oh, come on now, Luthor, you're supposed to be intelligent! Once the crowd's see how Eradicator has turned against them, they'll be begging for someone to stop her. Replied Scarecrow.
And that's where I come in, smirked Lex Luthor. I can gather a team together, some of her most powerful villains, and together we'll bring Eradicator down!
And then you will be Metropolis hero once again! Replied Scarecrow.
Lex Luthor laughed heartily, as he rubbed his hands together.
I take it, then, that you are willing to do business? Asked Scarecrow.
Ok, hold on a second! Replied Lex Luthor.
Lex Luthor and Scarecrow both turned to Mercy Graves as Lex Luthor called out...
Mercy... Said Lex Luthor.
I'm sorry, Lex, but I don't trust him, said Mercy Graves. I mean, if this plan could work, what about the very real danger of you being exposed as an accomplice?
You really should have more faith in your employer, Miss Graves, said Scarecrow. I'm sure Mr. Luthor can cover his own tracks well, he's done so successfully thus far.
Well... why do you even need his help anyway? If all you want is to show how Eradicator would react to fear, why not just carry out the plan yourself? Replied Mercy Graves.
It's quite simple, actually, explained Scarecrow. Eradicator has a high resistance to all forms of poison's and serums, including my fear toxin. The only way to successfully infect Eradicator would be to weaken this resistance, and the best known method for that would be... Said Scarecrow.
Kryptonite, finished Lex Luthor.
Excellent, said Scarecrow as Mercy Graves looked at Lex Luthor incredulously. The android known as Metallo can weaken her, whilst I administer my toxin, and from there... we watch the terror unfold.
Fantastic, said Lex Luthor smirking.
He held out his hand to Scarecrow, who grasped it. Keep it turned on at all times, and I'll be in touch.
You have yourself a deal... Replied Scarecrow.
As Mercy Graves watched on in sheer disbelief, Lex Luthor opened up a drawer, and pulled out an earpiece.
Lexcorp standard, Lex Luthor said, handing it to Scarecrow. Keep it on at all times, and I'll be in touch.
Will do, said Scarecrow placing the hardware in his ear. A pleasure doing business with you Mr. Luthor.
He gave a small bow of the head, before turning and walking towards the doors. As he passed Brock, who was now sitting in the corner, the muscled man cowered. This was noticed by Scarecrow, who chuckled as he left through the door.
