It was like a dream, the rental car gliding through the night, light rain spotting the window as the headlights cut through the dark. We were finally there. It wasn’t anywhere I wanted to be or ever thought I would end up but was it where I needed to be.

Ellis was sitting next to me, stoic as ever. He never let on what might be happening in his head, which was no doubt full of plans. Running through every scenario and how to deal with each of them. It was almost like he could see the future, at least a little bit, the law of probability working on his side.

Almost anyone could do it if they thought hard enough. It mostly came down to a matter of speed, Ellis apparently able to run through endless streams of potential and likelihood coming to a conclusion in record time. It was one of the few comforts I had in a situation like that, along with Luke and Jesse being there with us.
