"What are you doing, Evelyn?" asked the duke with a frown when he saw her still talking to her friends when they should be leaving for the palace half an hour ago. "I have already told you that we had a dinner appointment with his majesty. Do you want us to be late?" 

Evelyn looked at the lower noble girl who had circled around her with unease. She was not sure if it would work or not.. But she had no choice but to try.

They nodded at her as if assuring her when she took a deep breath and nodded to her father.

"Alright." she stood up when his father had a satisfied smile on his face as he forwarded his hands towards her.

She held him with a smile. After the death of her mother, where men marry in a day, her father decided to stay unmarried and take care of her. 

She was touched, proud and dreamt of a man like him. He could have easily found a partner, if not wife, he could have had an affair but still he was faithful to her deceased partner.
