章節 8: Chapter Seven
The witch
The news of Vivian destroying the truck circulated like wild fire around the city and even on the internet. Videos, blogs, picture and news of Vivian was uploaded on various news platforms. It was chaotic for Vivian and her friends. Sophia and Jackson who already knew about this and kept it a secret from everyone all this while we're concerned and tried to help but could not do anything since Vivian travelled back to her hometown. They only talk through phone calls and chats. Sadly enough, Vivian's parents had no idea that Vivian posses such power. At first they thought of asking her questions but on a second thought, they realized that she needs sometime to digest the whole situation and figure out a solution herself. Vivian went back to her hometown at Amagu In Enugu State. She visited an old man who used to be her grandfather's friend Maazi Ezeugo. According to her late grandfather, if any problem arises from the city because of her supernatural powers, there's a need to come back to the village and pay Maazi Ezeugo a visit.
On the day she decided to visit him, on getting to the door Maazi Ezeugo came out of his house to get her;
" The Queen of the sky, you're welcome"
Vivian looked back to see if he was referring to someone else but could only see children who were busy playing hide and seek and some other domestic animals walking freely in his compound.
"Are you talking to me ?"
" I'm talking to you my queen"
" Me ?" Vivian asked pointing to herself.
" Please come in and have a sit"
He ushered her into his house. He brought a piece of kolanut and offered some ancient prayer to his god then said;
" In Igbo land, women don't break kolanut so let's pay respect to our tradition"
" It seems to me like you have been expecting me"
" Of course my queen"
" But can you stop calling me that and help me understand what's going on because over there in the city my pictures are all over the city and even on the hot search list in the internet. My grandpa asked me to see you if I encounter any problem"
" I have been waiting for you because you are the reason why I'm not yet dead ha ha ha funny right ? Your grandfatherher used to be the chief priest of Cloud's shrine. You know Clouds, the goddess that give and takes rain, she controls the sky and everything in it. Rainmakers adore and respect her so much. Apart from matters that concern the sky, Clouds also answers and helps her priests and female servants who we call 'Queens'. And that is your case"
" Does that mean I need to come back to the village to serve her ?"
" No of course not, whenever she chooses a female servant she usually leaves her with a man to help her with rituals. The only thing that is compulsory for you as her female servant is to serve her and to come home during important rituals and festivals"
" So who's the man who is supposed to accompany me?"
" I already sent for him. He would soon be here".
" So what should I do concerning the news in the city I really cannot handle it and you know how Lagos is "
" Of course you can handle it, provided you don't abuse your abilities to intimidate others, so far it for safety. Just think of a way to handle it then you can do it"
" Can my super powers do anything at all ?"
" Of course "
Knock knock there was a knock on the door and Vivian's uncle walked in. She stood up immediately she saw him.
" Uncle Udo !"
" Vivian how are you, your grandfather told me everything already. Clouds chose you and I. I'm like an assistant to you. My job is to take care of the village matters and rituals and your job is to protect people and serve Clouds".
" Wow, my grandfather died when I was fifteen ever since I was born he kept telling me that I'm a special child and all that. I never understood untill now"
" I'm sure he taught you the basics " Maazi Ezeugo said
" Even more than the basics. He told me what to do when something bad happens and how to do control the weather as well as the rituals. I actually thought I was a witch"
" My job here is done" after saying this Maazi Ezeugo fell down and died. Vivian screamed and his granddaughter came running towards their direction. Uncle Udo shook his head and said;
" The great Iroko tree has fallen"
His granddaughter made calls to other family members who live in the city to inform them of his sudden death. Vivian called home to inform her parents too. When they rushed to their hometown the next day, Vivian explained everything to them;
" How come you never told us what you did with your grandfather"
" I was scared since he strictly warned me not to tell anyone about it. I was scared that something might happen to you if I had told you"
" How do you plan on handling the news in Lagos ?"
" I have a plan, I still have sometime left before the UTME results are out , I can sort it out"
" Do your friends know about this ? I hope they won't be scared of you"
" I can handle them".
After Maazi Ezeugo's funeral, Vivian and her family returned to Lagos together after finalizing Clouds' service with Uncle Udo.
On getting to Lagos, Jackson and Sophia were already at gate waiting for their them. As soon as Vivian stepped out of the car, Sophia jumped on her. The three hugged for a long time before finally letting go.
" How are you Vivi" Jackson asked
" Very well"
" How did the investigation go?" Sophia asked
" What investigation ? Actually my grandpa's friend was a very old man, you can barely hear what he says"
"Was ?"
" Yeah, he gave up to ghost after answering my questions. Anyway I miss our lodge, I'm so used to it that I now miss going there"
" No you can't. Everyone knows your face and you know how Lagos is , jungle justice here and there" Jackson said
" Plus people are saying you are a witch, I'm sure they will Stone you to death on seeing you, I suggest you should avoid going out for a while" Sophia suggested as they moved her luggages to her room.
" Shouldn't they be scared of me or something"
" Do you think you are in some kind of county where they will tag you " Superman' or ' Spiderman' huh?"
The door swung open and Vivian's mom told them to come out for dinner.
After dinner that night, Jackson and Sophia told Vivian that they would be spending the night there, Jackson would sleep in the guest room while Sophia shares the room with Vivian.
" So much for being a boy" Jackson muttered
Around 8: pm there was noise coming from the gate. The neighbors reported Vivian's return online and a bunch of people came to their gate shouting;
" Bring out the witch ! She is a witch !"
And all sort of ill words. Although Vivian's parents tried to prevent Vivian from going out but seeing that she's determined to go out they had no choice but to let her go.
On opening the gate, the mop of people outside all fell on Vivian and started beating her up. The dark clouds started gathering. Vivian noticed and tried to stop it before Clouds unleash her anger on the people. A guy brought a car tire and put it on Vivian's neck and was about to burn her when Sophia and Jackson ran to the scene. With their arrival, people's attention was divided and Vivian caused rain to take their memories of the whole news away. All memory except that of Jackson and Sophia were wiped. They soon started asking themselves what they were doing in someone's house and they started leaving one after the other. As the rain kept falling, all the news about Vivian were wiped out as well.
