"But…" Sissy said, her tone still carrying a hint of caution. "If he screws this up, I will be the first to say, 'I told you so.'"

"Deal," I replied with a small laugh as a genuine smile spread across my face. Despite her reservations, I felt deeply grateful for her support— even if it came with conditions.

Her expression softened for a moment, but then she straightened up, her brows knitting together. "However, Claire," she began firmly, "I still don't like him. At all."

I nodded, expecting as much, but before I could respond, she continued. "I am not saying this to upset you or make you angry. I just…" She sighed and looked me straight in the eyes. "I am saying it because I care about you, Claire. You are the only family I have left, and I am your only well-wisher in this entire messed-up world."
