章節 2: Shadows of the past

Camilla lay upon the forest floor, her body battered and bruised, yet a flicker of triumph burned within her weary eyes. The battle had raged fiercely, testing her mettle and resolve. Through sheer determination, she had emerged victorious, but the price she had paid was etched upon her wounded flesh.

With great effort, Camilla propped herself up, employing her sword as a crutch to support her trembling frame. The gash upon her arm throbbed with an insistent ache, a reminder of the impending need for care. Yet, her mind could not find solace in rest. Questions plagued her, their enigmatic answers eluding her grasp like elusive specters.

Why had Sirus the Doom and his cohort of assassins set their sights upon her? What had she done to attract their wrath? And most perplexing of all, how had they come to possess knowledge of her very name?

Her senses sharpened, Camilla cast her gaze across the sprawling expanse of the forest, searching for any sign, any hint of the unseen presence that had observed her every move. Shadows danced among the ancient trees, whispering secrets she yearned to decipher. There was a palpable air of intrigue surrounding this encounter, a layer of mystery yet to be peeled away.

Summoning the last vestiges of her dwindling strength, Camilla hobbled towards the fallen figure of Sirus, his once formidable countenance now diminished. She craved answers, hoping that his defeat had not robbed him entirely of his capacity to enlighten her. Drawing near, she nudged his armored shoulder with a cautious foot, urging him to awaken.

Sirus groaned, his eyes fluttering open as he struggled to dispel the haze of agony that enshrouded him. Dark, vengeful orbs fixed upon Camilla, a twisted amalgamation of anger and curiosity contorting his features. "You...," he rasped, venom dripping from his voice. "You should never have interfered."

Perplexity etched lines upon Camilla's brow, her countenance a tapestry of bewilderment. "Interfered?" she queried, her voice tinged with genuine confusion. "I fail to comprehend. Why did you assail me? Who orchestrated this assault?"

A bitter smile tugged at the corners of Sirus's lips. "Your memory fails you, as is often the case with your ilk. Your bloodline carries a debt—a debt that can only be repaid in crimson."

His words struck like an unseen dagger, a pang of unease coiling deep within Camilla's core. Memories, fragments of a forgotten past, whispered at the edges of her consciousness, clamoring for recognition. She fought against the encroaching fog that clouded her mind, desperate to grasp hold of her own history.

"What do you mean, my bloodline?" Camilla's voice quivered, a potent blend of fear and bewilderment. "Why should my family owe you anything?"

Sirus's laughter pierced the forest air, a cacophony of derision and malice. "Once, your kin were esteemed members of the Shadows' Guild, reveling in our trust. But they turned their backs, betrayed us, and absconded with our most closely guarded secrets. Our pursuit of them has been relentless."

Camilla's thoughts raced, pieces of a sinister puzzle fitting together with chilling clarity. It was not her own past that haunted her, but the transgressions of her lineage—the sins they had committed. The weight of their actions threatened to crush her spirit, a burden not of her own making but one she was inexorably bound to carry.

In the midst of her turmoil, a voice emerged from the inky depths of the surrounding darkness. "Camilla...," it whispered, at once familiar and distant. Startled, she turned her gaze, her eyes widening as a figure materialized from the shrouded veil of shadows. It was Renn, the lone assassin who had managed to evade the battlefield.

Renn approached cautiously, his eyes mirroring a mixture of trepidation and remorse. "I... I could not follow through," he admitted, his voice tinged with shame. "I could not bring myself to extinguish your life. You are different from them."

Camilla's gaze bore into Renn's, searching for sincerity amidst the tumult of emotions that churned within her. "Tell me, Renn. Reveal the truth of my family's past and the reasons behind their betrayal of the Shadows' Guild. I implore you to enlighten me."

Renn drew in a deep breath, his resolve solidifying. "Your bloodline..." As Camilla's eyes locked with Renn's, a flicker of hope ignited within her, a yearning to unearth the hidden truths that lay concealed within the shadows of her ancestry. But before Renn could utter another word, a malevolent presence disrupted their fragile moment.

Sirus, despite his incapacitated state, summoned a final reserve of strength, flinging a dagger toward Renn with deadly precision. The blade found its mark, piercing Renn's throat.

A gasp escaped Camilla's lips, a maelstrom of horror and sorrow intertwining within her as she bore witness to Renn's life snuffed out before her eyes. Her body froze, paralyzed by the gravity of the loss, as the truth she had fervently sought to uncover vanished, silenced forever within Renn's final breath.

Sirus, buoyed by his victory, redirected his attention toward Camilla. His eyes gleamed with sadistic satisfaction, savoring the torment he had wrought. "Your insatiable curiosity finds its end here, Camilla," he hissed, each word dripping with venomous malice. "The depths of your family's transgressions shall remain forever veiled. Your ignorance shall be your undoing." And with that, he brought about his own demise.
