She was breathing fast and blinking rapidly to be able to see something in this darkness, a glimpse of her assailant or what he's doing in the darkness, just anything. Because the worst apart from not being able to do something in a situation like this, is not being able to see anything. 

The kind of fear that settles into the heart at not being able to see the danger coming but just knowing that it Is coming, can make the experience ten folds terrifying. 

With much of rapid blinking, Alaina's eyes finally adjusted to the darkness in the room. 

Her eyes realized the small amount of light that managed to stream inside the darkness thru the narrow slit opening beneath the door of this place.

With the help of the light she judged she was apparently in the janitor's closet under the stairs. There were an assortment of cleaning supplies placed on the shelves behind the man in front of her, along with few of mops buckets and brushes.
