章節 69: Chapter 69:A Twist in the Shadows

The car quickly exited Shenzhen's city limits. Guo Xiaopeng watched the scenery blur past the window and sensed something was off. Glancing at the road signs ahead, he said suspiciously, "Isn't this the direction to Zhuhai?" The driver, keeping his eyes on the road, replied softly, "Yes, it's to Zhuhai."

In a peaceful coastal fishing village, G and his advisor strolled along the shore. G was dressed in traditional Chinese attire, wearing a silk tunic and round-toe cloth shoes. He remarked, "This scenery is so natural!" The advisor nodded, "Though it's a bit simple."

"There's even a flush toilet here, so how can it be called simple? I remember in the construction corps in the northeast, the toilets were outdoors. It's no exaggeration to say that urine would freeze before hitting the ground." The advisor nodded quickly.

"In '69, I went to the Golden Triangle and joined the guerrillas. Every day we camped outdoors, with nothing but a tree for shelter. Getting a good night's sleep once a week was a blessing." The advisor quickly echoed, "Your achievements are certainly connected to your experiences."

G looked at him mockingly, "Are my achievements great?"

The advisor nodded, "Comparable to Khun Sa's."

G scoffed, "There's an old Chinese saying: 'Aim for the highest standards in work, and the lowest standards in living.'"

The advisor looked puzzled, not fully understanding.

G patted his shoulder, "You may not grasp this now, but you will in time. Practice brings true understanding."

In the distance, a black sedan sped towards them.

The advisor said, "Our guests have arrived."

"Let's go welcome them!" G raised his leg and flicked the edge of his cloth shoe with his finger.

The rural courtyard was clean and spacious. Inside the living room, an antique-style Eight Immortals table was set up. Guo Xiaopeng sat at the head, with Wang Jingfei beside him. On the opposite side sat the advisor and an assistant. Guo Xiaopeng opened his laptop, ready for negotiations, while the advisor sipped tea. After a brief silence, the advisor began in a dignified tone, "May I ask where Mr. Guo is from?" Guo Xiaopeng, clearly impatient with the small talk, responded curtly, "Haizhou. Where is Mr. G from?"

Impersonating G, the advisor replied slowly, "My father was Chinese, my mother Burmese. I grew up near the border, sometimes here, sometimes there. So, it's hard to say."

Guo Xiaopeng impatiently tapped his keyboard, "Let's get to business."

"There's an old Chinese saying: 'Haste makes waste.' Let's chat first," the advisor said, turning to Wang Jingfei, "May I ask where you're from, Ms. Wang?"

Wang Jingfei smiled slightly, "I was born in Shanghai. My father is from Shandong, my mother from Zhejiang. I later studied in Beijing and Hong Kong, so it's hard to pinpoint."

Guo Xiaopeng, increasingly frustrated, cut in, "How much do you need, where do we deliver, and how do you plan to pay?"

The advisor deflected, "Why don't we have a meal first and talk while we eat?" Guo Xiaopeng, sensing a delay tactic, warned, "I may not be extremely busy, but Haizhou Pharmaceuticals needs managing. You've already delayed me a day by changing the meeting location. If you keep stalling, I'll assume you're not serious about negotiating."

The advisor, caught off guard by Guo Xiaopeng's assertiveness, was momentarily speechless.

In the adjacent room, G reclined on a lounge chair, eyes closed, deep in thought. A surveillance monitor on the table in front of him showed the images of Guo and Wang.

The advisor walked softly to G.

G opened his eyes slightly, "How do you feel?"

The advisor answered slyly, "What do you think?"

G closed his eyes again, "That Wang woman seems eager to know something. Her conversation goes beyond a subordinate's scope."

The advisor remained silent, listening.

"Intelligence says Guo Xiaopeng is a vain man, and Wang Jingfei has an unusual relationship with him. Wang also has a police background..." G waved his hand, "Take Wang Jingfei away. Handle her appropriately."

In the City Public Security Bureau director's office, Li Xinjian reported to Zhang Xiaohua about the interrogation of Liu Mei: "Liu Mei confessed to the assassinations of Yang Qiu, Lu An, and Lu Hui and admitted to buying ephedrine from Tiezi. But she hasn't said a word about Guo Xiaopeng."

Zhang Xiaohua asked, "She didn't mention any behind-the-scenes figures?"

"Pressed, she only mentioned Wang Jingfei," Li Xinjian replied, smiling bitterly.

Zhang Xiaohua instructed, "Continue the interrogation of Liu Mei. Collect as much evidence as possible to cut off any hope of leniency, then aim for a breakthrough."

Night had fallen. In the afternoon, Guo Xiaopeng and the advisor had discussed preliminary issues, planning to continue the substantive talks at night. He and Wang Jingfei sat quietly in the living room, waiting.

After a while, the advisor entered and said to Wang Jingfei, "Excuse me, I'd like to speak with Chairman Guo alone."

Wang Jingfei immediately stood up.

Guo Xiaopeng objected, "She is with me."

The advisor smiled lightly, "There's a saying in China, 'The guest follows the host.' Chairman Guo must have heard it." Guo Xiaopeng, annoyed, said, "What country are you from with so many Chinese sayings?" Wang Jingfei gently calmed him, saying, "It's okay," and walked out. The advisor followed, gesturing for Wang Jingfei to walk ahead. As soon as they stepped out of the courtyard, two burly men jumped from behind the gate and grabbed her. One man stuffed a chloroform-soaked towel into her mouth.

The advisor pointed to a small house, and the men quickly carried the unconscious Wang Jingfei inside. Everything was done swiftly and silently.

The advisor returned to the courtyard where Guo Xiaopeng was and said to G, who stood under the moonlight, "It's done." G nodded and slowly walked inside.

Guo Xiaopeng was pondering why G wanted to avoid Wang Jingfei and whether he should explain things thoroughly. He looked up, startled to see G standing before him. "Who are you?" he asked.

G, with a sinister smile, replied, "Can't you tell I'm the Beijing guy?" He repeated in the same tone he had used in their only phone call, "Many people around the world are interested in me."

Guo Xiaopeng suddenly realized, "You are Mr. G?"

G nodded with a smile.
