Ruby
I went home dejected and spent my day mostly crying. I had called Mia and told her everything that happened. Mia wanted to say that I was supposed to be careful and not jump into it right away. But if anything, she was also to be blamed for even suggesting her friend do something like that. It had been a reckless idea since the beginning and it was to be doomed anytime.
Mia had arrived at my home and all she could do was to try to make me not cry. But I did stop crying for some time and then again began to weep louder than the previous cry. I had no idea what I was going to do. I was already struggling myself to make ends meet and now I had a baby on the way. How will I give care for it? Or should I simply get rid of it? Won't that be a heartless thing to do? What kind of mother would that make me? And what about the baby daddy? What if he comes and asks for the baby? Even if I give birth to the baby, how will I take care of it on my own?
I had a train long questions and had no answers to them.
"We can solve this, Ruby. Don't worry," Mia said preparing some coffee for herself and me.
"How are we going to find a solution to this? I'm doomed for life and I have no idea how I am going to survive?"
"We can get in touch with the baby daddy and see if he is willing to be part of the baby's life. That way, you don't have to worry about taking care of the baby alone. You will only have to manage for other things,"
"Baby daddy," I snorted, "Would he even want to know about this baby's existence?"
"Who knows he might step up at least for the baby's sake," Mia reasoned.
I sighed heavily. Mia brought the coffee and some cookies to me. I had not eaten anything the entire day. Coffee and cookies do not make dinner but something was better than nothing.
Suddenly, my phone rang loudly and I glanced at it. It was Lily's phone number. Mia nudged on my shoulder and signaled me to pick the call and put it on the speaker. I obliged to it reluctantly.
"Hello, Ruby? Are you there? Why did you not receive my calls from morning?" came out Lily's voice.
"You are asking me why?" I expressed my anger.
Lily sighed, "I know it was a mistake and I am really very sorry about it. But there is something you should know,"
"What is it?" I asked taking Mia's words into consideration who was signaling me to listen to what it is.
"So you know... The baby daddy... The man whose semen was used to inseminate you,"
"What about him?" I asked with suspicion and Mia also most jumped on the bed hoping that the man would want to be a part of the baby's life. Or else I would be torn between a lot of things.
"Dr. Dylan had called me just now. He said that the baby daddy wants to meet you. Are you okay to meet him?" Lily spoke cautiously.
"Why does he want to meet me?"
"I don't know about why he wants to meet you. But I think it is right to meet him and let him know your thoughts and also for you to know about what he thinks about the baby," Lily made sure that she chose the right words. I know she did not want to hurt me anymore. She already sounded extremely bad to me about what happened.
Mia prompted me to say yes and I sighed praying that the man would be kind and nice to me and the baby and don't blame us for anything.
"Fine. I will meet him. Let me know the time and place. And what about the Hudson couple?" I asked. I was also concerned about the couple. Mrs. Hudson was so grateful and had left an emotional impression on me. I, who was in a bad condition myself, was concerned about the Hudson couple.
"Don't worry about them. The hospital has agreed to find a surrogate for the couple within a week."
The call ended after a few more talks between me and Lily.
"See, it is going to get better. You just have to keep calm," Mia said smiling at me. I could say that Mia was relieved a little knowing that the unknown man was trying to get in touch with me and she hoped it was for a good reason.
"Let me meet him first and then we will know if everything will get better or-" Mia did not leave me to complete the sentence.
"It will get better. Now shut up and have the coffee and cookies,"
We, the best friends had the coffee and cookies and Mia decided to stay back at my place. She did not want to leave her best friend alone to drown in her own personal misery.
We spoke a lot until late into the night. Mostly the talk was about the baby. Mia was pretty ready to become a godmother and a babysitter. She had even expressed to me that they should start thinking about names now only and also how we should be celebrating the baby's 100th Day and 1000th day.
I told my friend to stop being delusional. I did not even know if I was going to keep the baby. Despite everything that happened, deep down in my heart, I knew that I did not want to hurt the baby. I might have involved in the baby making but that was to give to someone else. But now, this baby belonged to me. It is my baby. I was the mother of this baby.
