20% Bakugan: Becoming a Demon / Chapter 3: Chapter 3 Cards from the Sky

章節 3: Chapter 3 Cards from the Sky

I've gotten into the habit of going away from home into the woods, into a clearing, into the shade, where it's just quiet... very quiet.

Why the vast forests in Japan town? Well, Wardington was something of an experiment in that respect. You could say that the town itself was in the middle of a forest. Why was there a need for such projects in the first place? Because of the dwindling number of plants on Earth due to human activity. Simply put, man is burying himself.

As for the reason why I go there... I don't know, I don't have a definite answer, it's just... it's like home is restless, unpleasant.....

I enjoy it.

In fact, even when the days of pain come, I feel better there.

Often it would just end with me climbing up the trunk of a tree, going somewhere to the sturdy branches with lots of leaves and falling asleep there to the rustling of the wind.

When I turned 13, I realized I wasn't going to get my father's attention.

He seemed to have finally slid down in life. He wasn't demoted or fired at the company, but there was only one reason for that: he couldn't be replaced.

My father had simply tied up all the processes that went with his position and fumbled things so that he was the only one who could work there. It's simply not profitable for the company to fire him, bring everything to order and only then look for another person.

As time went on, his doses of alcohol got higher and higher. No one followed him, no one rebuked him, and my requests not to drink were simply ignored. All in all, an easy and crooked path.

The simple fact was that he was now drinking somewhere around at least half a liter a day of whatever he could get his hands on.

Of course, talking about any kind of intelligence was just hard.

It was painful.

No, it wasn't that I was completely desolate, but... I felt an emptiness inside. Suffering, suffering, misery, endeavoring, studying... what for, if there was no one to support me?

Looking back at my classmates, I often see happy smiles on their faces. They all have good friends (in ignorance happiness) and family, but me... do I have a family?

If my father thinks I'm nothing, and my grandmother just refuses to communicate... who do I have?

Kiana?

She and I don't correspond.

Rayo and Shun, who I could say I've become friends with... well, neither do I.

It's not that I'm boring or that I'm a bore, but when offered to play something like catch, with my feeble body... it's just a sin not to say no.

Even if it's something different, like some game they made up at recess, it's bound to be something stupid.

For example, Dan had once gotten into a game that involved lifting Runo's skirt and looking underneath it, and though there had been no big scandal, he had gotten a big smack from the girl.

Nonsense indeed...

He thought it would be time for him to do something interesting, like the flying "quadrocopters" he'd seen in the shards of images, and where he'd roughly seen the full essence of how it should work, but reality... it surprised him.

One day all of a sudden, cards were sprinkled from the sky.

Adults didn't care about them, just waste paper, but children... they were happy to pick up everything that was lying around, and with such speed that people from the government had to take the materials for research from the children themselves.

Soon it got to my class.

Of course, I can't say I wasn't interested.

I took...a couple...purely out of curiosity.....

Then, about a week later, Cuso gathered Runo and Shun and together they discovered the secret of the cards - small round and expandable balls flew out of them.

Soon a game with them was devised, and, amazingly, the moment the game began, everything around them froze and they were transported to the arena.

According to the stories of the others, this arena had a silver-colored floor, and to the sides was a sort of polar glow of the colors of the elements.

That's right, the elements.

Each card hid a monster, dubbed a Bakugan, and the cards themselves depicted 6 elements.

Their names were Pyrus for fire, Aquas for water, Sabterra for earth, Darkus for darkness, Chaos for light, and Ventus for wind.

When the first awkward battles began, the spectacle was very exciting to the kids, and it also became a secret that was for the kids and exclusively from the adults.

It turned out that only children knew about the "miracle" of cards, and adults remained in bewilderment, and even if a child tells something, an adult, as it is supposed to the follower of common sense, will not believe that a small sphere can increase its mass more than 10000-100000 times after some words and throw.

Soon the first normal rules were invented and... the whole world of children was immersed in this game. It was so addictive that all online games became dramatically unpopular.

Picking up on this enthusiasm, Shinji took 3 cards from home, which he then decided to pick up.

Now they were selling open cards, where the Bakugan had already flown out from, and closed cards, but paying 250 yen a piece (open) was something he didn't want to do, especially realizing that depending on the usefulness and rarity, the price would only be higher.

There were cards that were gate cards - that is, the ones that you throw onto the field and the Bakugans fight on. You could open them and get some kind of boost or manipulate the field in some way, and there were ability cards - cards that directly applied boosts to a Bakugan no matter what position it was in.

For example, there was a gate card like Ghost Mind. Its opening effect was that when activated, all Bakugans on it lose.

Rayo in confidence had already told me a brilliant strategy with how Mantris uses the puppet ability, flipping an enemy Bakugan onto this empty gate card and opening it.

Then bam, that's it! Victory! And the enemy's strength doesn't matter!

This approach, of course, also played a big role in attracting my interest, because I didn't think that a game developed by "Team Kuso" would have any future other than direct force-on-force.

Well, as I realized, Kuso didn't touch the cards, they were already prescribed by themselves, so he couldn't spoil anything.

Taking 3 cards in my hand, I simulated the start of the battle.

"Bakugan, open the field of play!"

Time stopped. Everything froze.

A new change opened up to me, in which only I alone now existed.

Generally speaking, this opened up incredible scope for action: you could just grab a book, open this dimension, and read a book in 1 second of real time.

But that's not why I came here.

"Activate the ability cards, open the gate cards!"

The completely identical cards began to transform.

Three spheres - bakugans - flew out of the three cards.

The 1st was a gate card, "Gate of the Land", effect: +150g to Sabterra's Bakugans (g for strength).

Sabterra Robothalian flew out of it.

2-Is an ability card, "Rama of Fire", effect: +100g to Pyrus Falcon and the ability to reflect the ability.

Pyrus Falcon flew out of this card.

3rd - Ability card, "Color Death", effect: +100g to Darkus' Bakugans, -100g to everyone else.

Here it fell to him, surprisingly enough, a bakugan that is rare for absolutely everyone else - Sting of Darkus.

I'm the one who got so lucky? Really?

So, okay... what am I supposed to do with this goodness? According to the rules, if I don't have three bakugans of the same element, I can play with different ones, but that's kind of unprofessional - I'll get jailed. It's too ideal to take advantage of all the elements, although the cons are the same here. For example, my new color death card will only hurt me by reducing my strength by 100 if there are 3 bakugans of different elements in battle, although it will also cut the enemy's strength by 300, and although the original says "+100g to allies", it's apparently only for Darkus, simply because it's a unique darkness card.

As for the rules, it was simple.

Only 3 "lives" and 3 Bakugan, the loser is eliminated. Losing a Bakugan is minus one point.

Players each have 3 bakugans, 3 goal cards and 3 ability cards.

The one who loses all the Bakugans is eliminated.

The winning side's Bakugan is returned to their hand, meaning you can drop it somewhere else on the battlefield, and the gate card disappears.

Okay, let's go!

With these thoughts, I arrived at school tomorrow.

Well, obviously, once everyone heard that I had "that sting", and "Darkus", all the school kids were mine.

When I said that I wanted to organize a fight where the loser would give the cards and the Bakugans to the winner, there were surprisingly many people who wanted to join, because even though I knew I was as smart as Rayo, the words "Sting of Darkus" seemed to have a hypnotic effect.

In the end, one kid a grade older with three Chaos element bakugans agreed to the battle. He didn't have my Sting, of course, with its white coating, and it didn't fall there, but it could be sold well or traded for Chaos Siege, also a good bakugan... anyway, it was a good deal.

He even agreed to give in when he heard I didn't have enough cards, saying he would only use 4.

Well, he was baiting me, of course, but I'm not a bad guy myself, I'll beat a schoolboy someday.

His name was Kyo, by the way.

So we went outside.

"Bakugan, open the field of play!" - he said fiercely.

"Bakugan, open the field of play!" - I said lazily.

"Get ready to give me Sting!" - he said with a smile on his face, already thinking he had won.

Well, well, enjoy it... while you can.

"Goal card, on the field!"

"Goal card, on the field!"

"I'll give in to you, start!" said Kyo.

I doubt you knew I only had 1 goal card... good for me.

"Bakugan into battle," I launched the Sabterra Robothalian" Bakugan onto the field!"

At first I was amazed at the size of my fighter. It was a huge robot about 7 meters or so. It seemed to be some sort of exoskeleton covered externally with steel plates.

I looked at the clock. Ah yes... the watch... well, it's cheap, and the program on it to play the game at all is pirated, meaning it's free.

310g as a starting power... not bad.

"Robothalian? Hehe, try this!" he said.

"Bakugan, to the field! Go, Chaos Juggernaut!"

A huge white and yellow shell emerged onto the field, from which four limbs and a head soon emerged.

It was a huge turtle!

320 g - not pleasant...

"Fight!" ordered I, and the Robotalian didn't hesitate, immediately attacking with his fists.

"Open the gate card!" I said in pursuit as he ran. "Gates of Earth!"

The battlefield transformed, becoming an earthen surface with elevations.

[Battlefield Power Change: 310g+150g and 320g]

[Battlefield Power Change: 460g and 320g]

"Hey, not so fast! The card of abil..." - Before he could finish his sentence, Robothalian had already smacked the turtle right on the head.

There was a howl, and the bakugan couldn't take it anymore, transforming into a sphere and rolling back to the Chaos Elemental player's feet.

Ha!

The robotalian also curled up into the shape of a sphere, but flew into my hand.

The battlefield returned to normal.

Of the three glowing circles near the enemy's portrait, 2 were now burning.

The first round was mine!

"What a bastard! You just got lucky! Bakugan to battle, Bakugan to the field!" he said.

Another Chaos Bakugan, Serpenoid, 300g, appeared on the field.

This time a huge white and yellow snake came out, about the size of a two-story building. It hissed.

This is going to be more dangerous... basically, this round can be given away by just salting Robotalian, who I already have nothing on.

"Bakugan to battle! Bakugan on the field!" - Robothalian appeared.

"You're repeating yourself? That's okay, I'll have you crying now!" he smirked. "Open the gate card! Pair battle!"

"Pair battle?"

"Bakugan to battle, Bakugan to the field! Into battle, Chaos Falcon!"

A huge bird with four limbs appeared in the glow, also white in color, with two huge wings, and yes the creature itself was clearly gigantic, only slightly smaller than the snake next to it.

320 g.

And yet...

"What's with the paired battle?"

"You don't know?" he gave me a look like I was some kind of fool.

"It's my first battle..." I said, hinting at my inexperience.

"Ah... hehehe, that means everyone inputs one more Bakugan, so throw it already."

"Got it."

I mentally figured out what I wanted right now and if I could win this round.

The combined strength of the enemy is now 620 g, and my Robotalian had 310... no cards on it anymore, of course.

My options are Sting of Darkus (330 g) and Pyrus Falcon (320 g).

If I use the second option, I can try to neutralize something he can cast. The first option will hit everyone, but it's the best choice. Resolved!

"Bakugan to battle, Sting of Darkus on the field! Activate ability card, color death!"

A huge black and purple scorpion appeared on the battlefield, a terrifyingly shiny tail and a vicious expression on its muzzle was the first thing that caught the eye. Truly, a warrior worthy of his element.

[Battlefield Power Change, Sting of Darkus +100g, Sabterra Robothalian -100g, Chaos Falcon -100g, Chaos Serpinoid -100g]]

[Battlefield Power Change: 630g +100g-100g and 620g-200g]

[Battlefield Power Change: 630g and 420g]

"What?! What kind of power card is this?! You're cheating!!! Activate ability card, crush snake! Activate ability card, fire frame!"

[Battlefield Power Change: 630g-50g and 420g]

[Battlefield Power Change: 580g and 420g+100g]

As expected, the enemy is a rich pig. Fortunately, my card turned out to be stronger.

"Bakuboy!" said I, wanting to take out the trash as soon as possible.

"N-no, that's impossible!" he grabbed his head.

After a couple moments, the united Bakugans quickly unwound the snake that enveloped Robothalian, then sent the falcon to rest with a single kick.

With that, the fight was over.
