96.73% Another World Valoran / Chapter 148: Temple of the Divine

章節 148: Temple of the Divine

Xiao Mu Yu stood at the edge of the stone steps, his expression cold and indifferent, as he surveyed the tranquil shrine that stood amidst the bustling city.

In the realm of Valoran, only those deities with widespread worship would have temples erected in their honor. Temples dedicated to major gods, such as the Goddess of Dawn, could be found in most human cities, while lesser-known deities were relegated to modest shrines due to their scant followers.

It was evident that this so-called God of Harvest, Gunnar, was among those obscure deities.

Bathed in the morning sunlight, Xiao Mu Yu stood silently, allowing the tattered gray cloak behind him to flutter in the gentle breeze. His chilling aura enveloped him, rendering him akin to a lifeless statue, coldly poised before the shrine.

Deep within his pitch-black eyes lay a frigid emptiness; his indifferent gaze resembled a stagnant pool of despair, untouched even by the wind.

...

...

"If I were to grant you the opportunity for divinity and immortality, would you accept it?"

"I refuse."

"Why?"

"Because… only the power of a demon can fulfill my desires."

"Even if it means bearing the curse of the demon, living in eternal unrest?"

"Indeed."

"Is it worth it?"

"In this world, worth is merely a matter of perspective; it is about willingness."

"Ha… If that is the case, then… what are you hesitating for?"

... Teacher.

...

...

"Mr. Mu Yu… Mr. Mu Yu?" A gentle call roused Xiao Mu Yu from his reverie. He turned to find Freya looking at him with surprise, softly inquiring, "Mr. Mu Yu… what is the matter?"

"…" After a moment of silence, Xiao Mu Yu coldly replied, "Ah… my apologies, I was momentarily lost in thought. Is there something you need?"

"Um… I called you to come inside earlier, but you didn't respond. I thought you had heard me, but it seems you were distracted," Freya said, the corners of her mouth lifting into a friendly smile. "I came to inform you that breakfast is ready."

"…" Xiao Mu Yu coldly raised his gaze to the sky above. As expected, the sun had begun to blaze, indicating that it was nearly noon.

"I apologize, but I suddenly recalled some pressing matters and must take my leave," Xiao Mu Yu said frostily, looking at the girl before him. "Please prepare breakfast for me… However, it seems I shall have to savor your culinary skills another time."

"Ah… I see?" Freya clasped her hands over her flat abdomen, tilting her head in contemplation before smiling, "I had hoped you would enjoy my cooking this time, but alas, it seems my plans have fallen through… Hehe… However, I will be staying in Maple Snow for the time being, so if you are willing, there will be plenty of opportunities in the days to come."

"In the future, Mr. Mu Yu, if you have time, you are always welcome to visit the Glazed Shrine. I will be here," Freya said, her gaze warm as she looked at the icy man before her, a smile so gentle it could melt the coldest of ice gracing her lips. "Next time, I will ensure you truly enjoy my cooking."

"…" Xiao Mu Yu, his face still cold, remained silent for several seconds before finally nodding, "Ah… if the opportunity arises, I shall return."

Ultimately, that kind and tender smile could not penetrate the bone-chilling frost that surrounded him.

Xiao Mu Yu turned and departed with a frigid demeanor.

The girl stood at the edge of the stone steps, quietly watching as the figure of the man gradually receded down the sloping path. Suddenly, Freya called out from behind, "Mr. Mu Yu."

The man's footsteps paused momentarily before he turned back, his expression still cold.

In the bright sunlight, the beautiful girl had her delicate hands clasped over her abdomen, her long, flowing hair dancing in the breeze. A gentle smile graced her lips, contrasting with her ethereal white dress.

Seeing the indifferent man turn back, the girl revealed a playful smile.

"Mr. Mu Yu… do not forget that this place is also your home," she said, her red lips parting to reveal a voice as melodious as silver bells, imbued with a sweetness akin to flowing water. "Remember… to come home early."

The world seemed to come to a halt.

...

...

Xiao Mu Yu walked through the noble district, his expression as frigid as ancient ice, his deep, dark eyes piercing and profound.

In the recesses of his mind, the maniacal laughter of a demon echoed incessantly.

(Ha ha ha ha… ha ha ha… ha ha ha ha…)

"…" With a cold expression, he rubbed his forehead and said, "What… are you laughing at?"

(Oh? What am I laughing at? What am I laughing at? Ha ha ha ha ha… You dare to ask what I'm laughing at! Ha ha… Ha ha… Human boy, can you stop being so humorous? I'm about to die from laughter, ha ha ha ha…)

"…" With a frosty gaze fixed ahead, Xiao Mu Yu continued walking, yet the indifference in his profound eyes hinted at his contemplation. "Do you… know what just happened?"

(Just now? What happened? Hehe… What do you mean? Human boy, what are you talking about? I don't understand at all, hehe he he… ha ha ha…)

"…" Xiao Mu Yu remained silent for a few seconds before coldly asking, "Why did I suddenly lose focus at the Glazed Shrine?"

(Did you lose focus? You lost focus? Hehe… Why should I care if you lost focus? I'm not your babysitter, why should I concern myself with your every need? Losing focus is a perfectly normal occurrence, isn't it? As a sentient being, who never loses focus at some point?)

"Ah, indeed… losing focus is quite normal," Xiao Mu Yu said coldly, "However… the reason I lost focus this time was due to an external influence. In other words… there is a certain power within the Glazed Shrine that interfered with my thoughts."

As a ninth-tier master, even if he were to lose focus momentarily, his vigilance would not diminish to the point of requiring someone else to rouse him—let alone reaching a state where even repeated calls would fail to bring him back to awareness.

(Um… Human boy, are you implying… that there is something strange about the Glazed Shrine? Hehe… Ha ha ha… ha ha ha…)

"You… what are you laughing at?" Xiao Mu Yu asked coldly. "What is so amusing?"

(What's so funny? What's so funny? You dare to ask me what I'm laughing at? Ha ha ha ha… I'm laughing at you, you fool! Ha ha ha ha… Human boy, I've just realized you are utterly adorable! I mean… do you have some sort of paranoia? You can conjure a multitude of absurd reasons from your momentary distraction… I say, why are you always so guarded against this and that? Doesn't it tire you?)

(The Glazed Shrine has nothing unusual about it! It's you who is overthinking! I mean, can you not be so humorous? Why not just be a normal person? To me, there's nothing strange about the Glazed Shrine; the truly peculiar one is you! Right now, you should stop contemplating all those bizarre notions and focus on curing your paranoia; that's what truly matters.)

"Are you… certain?" Xiao Mu Yu asked coldly. "Certain that there is nothing strange within the Glazed Shrine?"

(Oh? Human boy, are you seeking my opinion? Oh hehehe… So I hold such significance in your mind? You actually want to consult me… Oh, how thrilling! How exciting! Ha ha ha ha…)

(I'm almost moved to tears… ha ha ha…) "…" Xiao Mu Yu fell silent for a few seconds, disregarding the rambling demon, and coldly halted before a lavishly decorated villa estate, his icy gaze ruthlessly scrutinizing everything within the estate—Count Little's residence.
