Soft golden light flickered from the hurricane lamp placed on the bedside table. It cast eerie shadows about the room. Kane was slow to move around the place. He looked at all the books and toys neatly placed where they belonged. He already missed Deacon.
Kane moved closer to where Giselle lay resting in the bed. He saw her fractured leg wrapped in plaster bandages and hung in traction on a strange device over the bed. Her arm was also in plaster bandaging. It was in a sling and lay in an awkward position over her body.
He watched a pained grimace appear on Giselle's face, and she called him with her raspy voice.
"Kane…Where are you? Uh! My leg hurts…"
His heart clutched in his chest, hearing the way she called for him in agony. It was sad to see her smashed-up body lying motionless on the mattress.
It's amazing that even a stranger can see the unbreakable bond between Kand and Giselle.
