21.42% Affections of Power and Wealth / Chapter 3: Chapter 2: Shifting Sands

章節 3: Chapter 2: Shifting Sands

The clink of glasses and murmured conversations filled the private lounge at one of Seoul's most exclusive restaurants. Hyun-soo had been here countless times, but the glittering chandelier and lush velvet seating no longer impressed him the way they once had. He had reached the point in his career where power and luxury had become routine—where the finer things felt more like a performance than a reward.

Seated at a round table with some of Soorin Corporation's most powerful executives, Hyun-soo nodded politely as they discussed the finer points of the merger. But his mind was elsewhere, distracted by the weight of Ji-eun's words from earlier that day and the sound of Mi-jin's hurt voice echoing in his ears.

Ji-eun had left him with a chilling reminder: everything comes at a price. And Mi-jin, who had been with him when he had nothing, was starting to feel like one of those prices—someone whose simplicity no longer fit in his gilded world of wealth and ambition.

"So, Jung Hyun-soo, I hear you're the man who's going to make sure this merger goes off without a hitch," one of the older executives said with a chuckle, snapping Hyun-soo back to the present. The man was the picture of an old-school corporate shark, his white hair slicked back, his voice oozing confidence.

Hyun-soo gave a slight nod, masking his unease with a practiced smile. "That's the plan."

"Good," the man said, raising his glass in a mock toast. "This is the deal that'll cement Soorin's place at the top. You'll be remembered for this."

The weight of that statement pressed down on Hyun-soo, and not in the way it should have. Being remembered for this? For stitching together a merger based on half-truths and shaky partnerships? His rise at Soorin had given him more than he had ever dreamed of—wealth, status, influence. But the more he saw behind the curtain, the more he wondered how much of it was built on corruption, on deals that were barely legal, on alliances with people who wouldn't hesitate to destroy him if they could benefit from it.

But that's how the game was played, wasn't it?

"Hyun-soo, are you listening?"

Hyun-soo blinked, realizing the table had fallen silent. Han Soo-jin, seated beside him, was giving him a curious look. Unlike Ji-eun's composed professionalism or Mi-jin's quiet warmth, Soo-jin exuded charm and sophistication, with a hint of danger lurking beneath her glamorous exterior. A successful actress, Soo-jin was used to the world of the rich and powerful, moving through it with ease. And, like him, she knew how to put on a performance.

"I'm sorry," Hyun-soo said, shaking his head slightly. "Just lost in thought."

Soo-jin gave him a knowing smile. "You've been working too hard. You need to relax, enjoy life a little. You're at the top now, Hyun-soo. Let yourself have some fun."

Fun. The word seemed foreign to him these days, though it had been abundant when he'd first entered the corporate world. Back then, he had reveled in the luxury and the parties, the sense of finally being part of something elite. But now, everything felt more like an obligation than a celebration.

"I'll try," he replied, though he wasn't convinced himself.

Soo-jin leaned closer, her voice lowering just enough for only him to hear. "I hear you've been spending a lot of time with Ji-eun lately. Are things getting serious?"

Hyun-soo stiffened slightly. The rumors about his and Ji-eun's "relationship" had been circling for a while, though there was little truth to them—at least, not in the romantic sense. Yes, they spent time together, and yes, there was an undeniable chemistry between them, but it was complicated. Ji-eun wasn't just another woman in his life; she represented the future of Soorin Corporation. A relationship with her would come with a level of entanglement that went far beyond personal emotions.

"It's all professional," Hyun-soo said carefully, not wanting to feed the gossip mill. "We're working closely on the merger."

Soo-jin smirked, clearly amused. "If you say so. But you should be careful, Hyun-soo. People are watching you, and Ji-eun isn't the kind of woman you get involved with lightly."

Hyun-soo gave her a sidelong glance. There was something in her tone that suggested more than just casual interest. Soo-jin was no stranger to the world of manipulation and hidden agendas. She had climbed her way to the top of the entertainment industry, and she understood the game as well as anyone.

"And what about you, Soo-jin?" Hyun-soo asked, deflecting the attention. "You seem to have no trouble navigating this world."

Soo-jin's smile widened, though it didn't reach her eyes. "I've learned how to survive, Hyun-soo. It's all about knowing when to play along and when to make your move. You should keep that in mind."

As the dinner continued, Hyun-soo found himself tuning out once more. The discussions about stock options and market strategies blurred together, and all he could think about was the growing chasm between who he was and who he used to be.

After dinner, Hyun-soo made his way to the restaurant's exit, loosening his tie as he stepped outside into the cool night air. The city hummed around him, neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement from a recent rain. For a moment, he considered calling Mi-jin, but he hesitated, knowing that whatever conversation they had would only make the distance between them more painful.

As he stood there, trying to figure out where to go next, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was Choi Eun-ha, the whirlwind actress who had swept into his life with as much force as her fame.

"Hyun-soo, where are you?" Eun-ha's voice was lively, almost teasing. "I'm heading to a party with some producers. You should come. It'll be fun."

"I'm not really in the mood for a party," Hyun-soo replied, his voice tired.

"Oh, come on! You're always working. You need a break. Besides, it'll be good for your image if you're seen at these kinds of events."

Hyun-soo sighed, rubbing his temple. This was the part of his new life that he had grown to resent—always being on display, always having to think about how every move would be perceived. He had entered this world to escape the hardships of his past, but now it felt like he had only traded one set of chains for another.

"I'll think about it," he said finally.

Eun-ha laughed. "That's what you always say. Just show up, Hyun-soo. You can't hide forever."

The call ended, leaving Hyun-soo standing alone on the street, surrounded by the bustle of the city but feeling more isolated than ever.

---

Later that night, Hyun-soo found himself back in his high-rise apartment, staring out at the glittering skyline. He could see the party lights in the distance, hear the faint echo of the city's nightlife below. But he wasn't part of it—he was just an observer, separated by the very success he had fought so hard to achieve.

His phone buzzed again. This time, it was a message from Mi-jin.

"Hyun-soo, I know you're busy, but I need to talk to you. Please."

He stared at the screen, the words blurring as exhaustion washed over him. He wanted to respond, wanted to reassure her that he hadn't changed—that he was still the same person. But the truth was, he wasn't. And the deeper he went into this world of wealth and power, the harder it was to remember who he had been before.

With a heavy sigh, he put the phone down and turned away from the window. For now, he would sleep. Tomorrow, he would face the same choices, the same pressures, and the same uncertain future.

But tonight, he would let the city carry on without him, as he stood alone in the shadow of his own success.

---

This chapter deepens the sense of isolation Hyun-soo feels as he navigates the complex world of corporate politics and the relationships that both support and entangle him. It also highlights the growing disconnect between him and Mi-jin, as well as the dangerous allure of Ji-eun and Soo-jin's worlds.
