First came Jone's fiancé, Lisa. She had a tall figure. As she entered the interrogation room she asked "Where is the previous police officer? He had already done our investigation."
"Well mam. I am his senior. Some facts have come to light which suggest that this may be a murder. So can you help us and explain some facts?"
"What? It was not an accident? And there I was thinking that he had reverted to his wrong ways even after he had promised me." Lisa said sorrowfully.
"Reverted mam? So are you saying that he was a candy supplier all along?"
"Yes sir. There were many rumors about him that he was selling drugs. As I am teacher some of my students were also his customers. Because of that I had threatened to cancel my marriage with him. But he promised me that he will leave the drug dealing, find some other job in the town and be a good man. He also started working towards it. I talked with the school management and helped him get a peon job in the school. He was also doing the job diligently. But some days ago-"
Shastri gave her a glass of water. After drinking it she continued," Three days before his death, jone went to meet some friend. He was happy when he came back. He said that he had explained his situation to his friend to which his friend had said okay. But I felt somewhat uneasy. That day when he came back he received the phone call. I said to him not to go. He said it was final party with his friend and he will come back as soon as possible. But would have known that…." She began sobbing.
Shastri called a lady cop to handle her. Then he went outside for a cup of tea.
At that time the police station was full. Shastri looked around and began to speak.
"As all of you know the death of Mr. Jones which we considered as accident may be a murder. Many points have come up to support this hypothesis"
Shastri continued "You may be thinking why I have called you all for interrogation. But please know that murderer is a very wise man. If he even caught a wind about his arrest, he would have taken measures which would have prolonged the case."
"What? The murderer is one of us!" the people began murmuring. Some even looked at each other suspiciously.
Shastri ignored them. He just went and sat near Mr.Abeer, one of Jones friends.
"What? He is the murderer?" the crowd asked in unision.
"What, if I go and sit near him, he is the murdrer? Then if I go by the same logic that water cooler should also be the murdrer"
The Crowd suddenly fell silent.
Shastri ignored them and asked abeer" So what were you doing at the time of accident?"
"I was sleeping at the house."
"So did you get any visitors? Your neighbor did say that the gate opened twice."
"What? The gates did not open up that night. You are lying."
"ME? I am not lying. It is the nosy neighbor lying" Shastri said sarcastically.
Then without looking at abeer he began through the passenger files. Abeer looked more crestfallen.
"So you were at the house at the time of the accident?" Shastri asked.
"YES.YES.YES!!!" Abeer cried frantically" Why are you suspecting me?"
"Because there are plenty of reasons. Is there any witness who is willing to testify for this so called alibi? By looking at your face I don't think so. But first I start by dismantling your so called alibi."
Shastri then looked around and began to speak "You see, first I started the case with checking the witness reports. Now they had been segregated into passenger witness reports and eyewitness reports. Now, I was one of the passenger of the bus and I could not sleep because of the turns in the Ghats. So I gave a task to myself- to count the no of passengers. Guess What?"
"There were only 42 passengers in total. And guess the number of people found in the witness report?"
There was tiptop silence as shastri almost whispered "43".
Shastri continued dramatically "So someone had joined us specifically after the bus had stopped because we had no stop in the ghats.
"You were safe when the death of jones was considered as an accident. Once you were considered a potential suspect many evidences against you emerged" shastri said nonchalantly.
"But…But where is the proof?. Without that you can't arrest me" Abeer said sneering.
"That was why a search warrant was issued. So that we can find evidence."
" On the basis of what?" asked abeer his voice quivering.
"On the basis that you are the drug dealer" shastri answered calmly.
