It was fortunate that their friends were arriving the next morning because their last few moments with one another were filled with unaddressed heaviness. 

They still spoke to one another but both of them were walking on eggshells. The thoughts they were having were very different. 

Varya worried that Basileus was disappointed with the idea of never having a child again considering he missed the earliest moments of their child's life. She felt bad that she couldn't quite let go of the fear of going through sickness again or the possibility of being burnt again.

Basileus, on the other hand, worried that he hadn't proven himself worthy enough to father another child. He knew it was his inferiority complex eating away at him after hearing her words but he couldn't stop his racing thoughts.
