CHAPTER 110

288 AC

POV DONNEL DRUMM

Raiding of Deepwood Motte should have started today, and even if I got there during that time, at best, I could have been the goddamn Tawney's backup force, and that was not acceptable either for my dad or me. We had burned and looted the towns and villages around The Flint Cliffs, but that was not enough honor for our House. I will not play second fiddle to anyone. So, I decided to raid Bear Island while Tawney plundered Deepwood Motte.

We had landed without incident and were heading towards the castle of House Mormont, and all of a sudden, all hell broke loose. Huge boulders were coming down between us from the top of the hill and killing my men. I thought an army ambushed us for a moment, but as the battle progressed, I realized that we were only fighting against one person.

I couldn't believe that this old man who had been riding a wolf had magical powers. Seeing this, some of my men wanted to flee, and I was able to regain control by executing those who escaped. At first, I thought it was a mummery, but before our eyes, huge stones were appearing in front of his hands, and he wasn't the only one with magical powers either. A raven bigger than an eagle was attacking us from the sky.

I had barely escaped one of this raven's attacks when I noticed a rock was coming toward me. There was no time to run. All I could do was put my shield in front of me and hope it would be enough. Time seemed to crawl by. I could see the giant boulder coming towards me from the corner of my shield, shattering my men.

I closed my eyes and braced myself for the impact. But the violent collision I expected did not happen. All I felt was like someone really weak was pushing my shield, then a second later cloud of dust.

I couldn't make any sense of it. The bodies around me proved that this man was not a mummer, but why did this attack not affect me? I couldn't understand what had happened, so I retreated to calm down. Just then, the giant raven dived again and cast its magic. The men next to me had turned into sacks of meat, but in the midst of these men, nothing had happened to me. It was like the spell was parting ways right on top of me.

Was the Drowned God protecting me? This old magic caster's magic was ineffective against me. At this very moment, the mage's hands began to blaze, and now my men were slowly breaking down. Even our elite warriors can no longer keep soldiers in line. I gathered all my courage and plunged into the flames, and as with other magic, the flames were splitting in front of me. With all my might, I hit the side of the giant wolf with my shield and knocked the man down.

POV MC

As soon as I fell to the ground, I immediately stood up, but I couldn't understand how this man passed through my fire magic. A revival of courage came to the soldiers who saw me fall to the ground. They charged Lyka and prevented her from helping me.

I hurled a tegonden (earth shard ) spell at the man approaching me. But as soon as the spell touched the man's shield, it turned to dust and scattered. I couldn't believe my eyes and immediately used Authenticate. Nothing, it was showing nothing. I was starting to panic because I couldn't feel a drop of mana from the man himself.

It could mean two things: either he was a stronger mage than me, or he had an artifact working on him as a ward. My eyes suddenly fell on the blood-red sword in the man's hand. This must be it. I could feel subtle magical fluctuations from this sword. The magic I was feeling from it was old, really old.

I was able to block the man's sword with my own, but every time the swords collided, deep crevices formed on my sword. His sword had begun to damage my steel sword as if it were made of copper. Ironborn soldiers surrounded me with every passing second, and it was almost impossible for me to get out of there.

With each sword clash, the man was pushing me back. He was so much faster and stronger than me. His sword and physical superiority were causing me to lose the exchange. The distance between our sword skills meant nothing in this scenario.

I used sambrar (fog cloud) to get out of the man's grasp, but the fog that formed dissipated instantly the second it came closer than two meters to the man, so he could still see me clearly. We clashed swords a few more times, and he kicked me to the ground. I wanted to use the force of the strike and meld into the earth using Melada Tegon(meld with earth), but just as I was going to cast it, his sword came crashing down on me. There wasn't enough time, so I chose to roll out of the way.

Good thing I rolled because his sword stabbed deep into the ground as easily as a hot knife through butter. If I had entered the ground, I would be dead by now. The man effortlessly pulled his sword out of the ground and was getting ready to attack me when I used the strongest magic, and I had to open the distance between us. I screamed in panic:

"Zagon jelmāz (call lightning)."

The cloud immediately formed and struck a lightning bolt right on the man with a loud noise. The man cried out in panic for a moment, and I thought this spell was working, but I didn't intend to wait here and see the result. The second lightning struck, I activated the Melada Tegon(meld with earth) spell, but this spell was not instantaneous, like jumping into the water. The first ground entry was a bit slow.

The man lunged towards me as if nothing had happened and tried to lop off my head, but thanks to sinking to the ground and my quick reflexes. I managed to dodge, but he started to bring his sword down the second I dodged. I could feel the cold water pouring down my back. I was knee-deep into the ground, and my speed had already halved. There was no way for me to dodge the next strike. I stretched out my nearly shattered sword, and there was nothing I could do but hope that would be enough.
