chapter 31| Cas
"Hibi this isn't funny wake the fuck up"
I shook her limp body to no avail as her face had lost its lively glow and her eyes drained of light. My hand instinctively flew to her neck to feel her pulse and to my delight, I felt the normal staccato of her heart beneath my fingertips.
I brought the horse to a stop to check her back and there it was. My breath left my lungs at the arrow that was embedded deep into her back, I couldn't help but hope that it didn't touch her spine but as I brought up her shirt to gaze at the angry bleeding flesh I was not sure my hopefulness would prove helpful.
Fuck I need to get her out of here.
My eyes flew back to where my aunt was still standing and my blood ran cold. But not because of the overconfident but disappointed look on her face, no, it was the lack of a large furry body that previously stood beside her.
Her cat had jumped to the ground and started its prowl for its prey. It's large blue eyes burned deeply into my soul and I swallowed only to find that my mouth had dried up in fear. I was not sure what my aunt told him but it didn't look to be anything friendly.
Adaora wouldn't hurt me, right?
I nodded to myself, trying to convince myself more than anyone else. I glanced down at the sleeping beauty in my arms and bit my lip.
I'm not sure it's the same for her.
I spared a look behind me at the dark forest ahead. Freedom was close yet so far.
What are the chances this horse will outrun this cat?
The horse almost looked as scared as I was as its senses told it to run but I'd not given it instructions yet. I am incredibly and astonishingly fucked.
The panther on the other hand let out a growl that nearly made me drop Hibi but once I got her stable in my arms the horse took off. It sprinted at full speed, it's ears high in the air and its eyes laced with horror. It would've dropped me if I hadn't gotten a good grip.
Obviously, the feline took this as a race of who was faster than who and took off after us. As I looked into it's determined eyes I realised this was no longer a mission but more of a game to it. It was noticeably going slow as if to take its time but still kept up with the horse as we entered the dark forest.
The sun was going down which meant the leaves were starting to make shadows out of each other creating an unsettling but still visible shade. Adaora's pets skin seemed to blend in with the dark creating an illusion that we were being chased by a very fast pair of striking blue eyes.
Which seemed to be looking hungrier by the minute.
The cat seemed to tire of this game and added a bit more speed in its step, as it bounded after us. The only good news was that we had left sight of The Castle Of Spades and my aunt, which meant if we got away now we'd have truly escaped.
But as I looked back at the vicious predator close on our tails I was starting to doubt that would be possible. I needed to get the cat of our trail and do it fast or else we'd be as good as dead.
My mind raced with ideas and I slowly started to remember something. My mother was also fond of cats and kept a few around the castle, she mostly kept them around to keep me in line as whenever I'd find myself in trouble she'd strap me to a chair and place the innocent large-eyed bundle of fluff in front of me and kill it mercilessly.
Sometimes I wonder if my tears and pleadings of her to stop truly amused her or satisfied her hunger to see everyone around her beg.
But she taught me other things as well, other than the many ways to kill a cat. She taught me pressure points along with sensitive places that would either temporarily paralyze a cat or shove it into unconsciousness along with many other things eight-year-old me didn't want to hear about.
I wonder if one of those would work on a cat a hundred times the size of the ones my mother dealt with.
I grabbed the reins and yanked them back, dragging the horse into a nonconsensual and probably extremely idiotic stop. It neighed in protest but I held the reins tight and slowly climbed off the animal and rubbed it's side to calm it down.
Relax I'm as scared as you are.
I quickly made sure Hibi was strapped in just in case the horse took off again, fleeing for its life and hers.
The cat had stopped a few feet away and was now just staring at us in a strange way, almost mirroring disbelief. I tried not to feel intimidated under it's judging stare but I couldn't help but want to almost defend myself and explain my plan to it for the sake of my pride.
I took a step towards it with my hands in the air but far away from it just in case the feline wanted a snack. But the more steps I took towards it I realised that it didn't seem interested in me, in fact, it looked almost bored as it pierced me with its jaded stare.
"So what's your name?" It didn't reply but let out a huff that almost blew me backwards with the hot air. I checked around its neck, my eyes connecting with the pressure point I was looking for. I looked back in its eyes and gave it a sheepish smile.
"No collar huh?" Its teeth bared in a quiet growl as if it understood what I meant. "Okay okay, I get it, not much of a domestic cat huh?"
The cat completely lost interest with my boring stalling and looked behind me. Its eyes narrowed on its target which I'm not sure whether it meant it was hungry or it was about to get Hibi.
Either way, I knew I had to work fast.
As soon as its head was turned I dived for its neck, which was immediately caught by the cat. My palms caught the feel of the silky soft fur and I felt pain erupt in my leg as sharp teeth grazed my ankle. The cat when for another bite but it was too late, I pressed hard, which was difficult considering the thick flesh and tough muscles but I felt it.
I had to jump back to avoid being crushed by the large animal but it didn't matter. The cat was out cold. I took another step back to catch my breath and glanced briefly at its eyes to check if it was actually unconscious and I found my answer at it's closed eyelids.
Did I really just?-
My adrenaline slowed and it was quickly replaced with joyous disbelief "YES!" I yelled into the empty forest, birds above scattered at the sound of the loud noise but that didn't spoil my mood. "I JUST TOOK OUT A CAT" My words registered in my head and my happiness melted into guilt.
I stumbled back into a tree and grasped the bark. Did I just use one of my mother's teachings too-? My palm flew to my mouth in horror as I looked at the poor innocent creature that was probably just following its master's orders.
Am I becoming like-
"Yeah Caspian is totally-s-s-sexy as f-fuck" I dazed murmuring snapped me out of my train of thoughts as the voiced matched Hibi's. She seemed to be muttering nonsense in the heat of whatever poison or drugs they put at the end of the arrow that was still poking out of her lower back.
I walked up to her to see her face slowly gaining more colour as she continued to mouth and mumble incoherent words underneath her breath. Her dark eyebrows were pulled into a frown as her cute lips spoke words that did not make sense.
Gorgeous.
I lifted her up gently and adjusted her into a more comfortable position. "C'mon let's get you as far away from here as possible," I thought I heard her speak a reply but chuckled as I realized it was just more mindless gibberish. I looked back and smirked as my eyes caught sight of a small tooth that peeked out of the cat's mouth and glinted in the light.
"But first let's get a quick souvenir".
