This is a poem that comes from Gong Zizhen, an intellectual active in the late Qing dynasty. He descended from a family of eminent scholars and officials, and with great hopes and dreams of changing the Qing dynasty, he joined the imperial court as an official through clearing the imperial exams. However, he soon realized that what he could change as a minor official was really limited, and he eventually became disillusioned and resigned from his role, returning back to his homeland.
This poem depicts his feelings after he retired from his job.
