　　A slow, chilling smile stretched across George's face, the threat in his words hanging heavy in the air. Before I could even formulate a response, he turned on his heel and sauntered towards Abel's room, leaving me trembling in his absence.

　　Relief, laced with a tremor of fear, washed over me. He hadn't revealed anything to Alexander...yet. But his silence felt temporary, a stolen breath before the plunge.

　　By the time Alexander returned, I had managed to regulate my breathing and pretend that I was doing okay, even though I knew I wasn't. He tucked his phone away, a frown creasing his brow as he met my gaze. "Did everything go okay in there?" he asked, his voice laced with concern.

　　I forced a shaky smile. "Yeah, he just wanted to talk," I admitted, the words a pale reflection of the turmoil churning inside me. "He apologized."

　　"He did?" Alexander raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Apologized for what?"
