Gray covered his face with one hand, hiding a sly grin. "You know," he said in a low, almost conspiratorial tone, "if Natsu comes back and finds out that we've completed an S-rank mission without him, his expression will be priceless."
Hearing this, Kira's lips curled into a pleased smirk. Well said, Gray. That's the spirit! Let the battle for these three slots begin, everyone!
The guild members around them perked up immediately. Their faces lit with amusement, and the room buzzed with excitement. Everyone loved a bit of drama, and this situation promised some entertaining fireworks in the near future.
"Huh? Hahaha!!! You're absolutely right!"
"I can already see the look on Natsu's face!"
"This is the perfect chance to show off in front of him."
Gray, encouraged by the enthusiasm, burst into laughter. "Wahahaha! Excellent! Count me in! If we run into any tough enemies, just leave them to me!"
Success. Gray was sold, and Kira couldn't be happier. He could already imagine the spectacle unfolding when Natsu found out.
Still, if Gray was this eager, surely the others would be too... right?
But as Kira turned to rally the crowd, he realized something peculiar: where was everyone? The cheerful banter and responses he expected were missing. The crowd had dispersed, leaving only a handful of stragglers.
Confused but undeterred, Kira approached Kana, who was nursing a drink alone.
"Kana," he coaxed, leaning in, "why don't you come along? I'll even show you the new card set. Once you see what they can do, I guarantee you'll want to buy them."
Kana scoffed, barely lifting her eyes from her glass. "Forget it. If I buy those cards, I won't even be able to afford drinks when we get back."
Kira sighed dramatically. "What a shame. I thought you'd want to see how far you still have to go to reach S-rank."
Kana froze for a moment, but instead of responding, she took another long swig of her drink.
Next, Kira sidled over to Rocky and gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder. "Rocky, what about you? Care to join us?"
Rocky shook his head without hesitation. "Nah, I've got a date tomorrow."
"Scumbag," Kira muttered under his breath. "One day, you'll regret it when your kidneys give out."
Turning his attention elsewhere, Kira called out, "What about Levy?"
Before Levy could answer, two overprotective voices rang out. "Hey! What are you planning, Kira? Levy's with our team!"
Levy hesitated for a moment before softly replying, "I think I'll pass. It's too early for me to handle an S-rank mission."
"El... Oh, wait," Kira mumbled to himself. "Why did I even think of asking Elfman?"
One by one, Kira asked others around the guild, but every response was the same. Some claimed prior commitments, while others admitted they didn't feel ready for such a high-level mission. It was a frustrating turn of events for Kira, who had been so confident that the guild's infamous brawlers would jump at the opportunity to prove themselves.
"Unbelievable," he muttered. "You call yourselves Fairy Tail wizards? You don't even have the ambition to join an S-rank mission team with me. How do you expect to grow stronger?"
Throwing his hands up in exasperation, Kira turned back to Gray. "Forget it. Looks like it'll just be the two of us."
Gray nodded eagerly. "When do we leave?"
"Tomorrow morning."
The next day, in the coastal town of Hargeon, the mission began.
Standing on the shore, Kira unfolded a map and studied it carefully, comparing the drawn details to the coastline before him. According to the mission instructions, Karna Island was just half a day's sail from their current location.
He glanced back at the group behind him, frowning in confusion. "Wait a second," he said, gesturing toward the trio. "What are you two doing here? Didn't you say you couldn't come?"
Behind him stood Gray, dressed in a crisp white coat and carrying a small travel bag. His face gleamed with eager anticipation.
Next to Gray was Kana, her usual revealing attire complemented by a diagonal card pouch strapped to her waist. She reeked of alcohol and was still sipping from a bottle.
And then there was Rocky.
"I get why Kana's here," Kira said, narrowing his eyes. "But didn't you have a date, Rocky? Abandoning your little sister for this—is that really okay?"
Gray raised an eyebrow at Rocky. "Yeah, and aren't you still avoiding anything related to Celestial Mages after what happened last time?"
Rocky shrugged nonchalantly. "I thought it over last night. Opportunities to join an S-rank mission don't come around every day. Besides, I can reschedule the date. No big deal."
Kira smirked knowingly. You're here for the golden key, aren't you?
Though he saw through Rocky's motives, Kira decided not to call him out.
"Ah, I see," Kira said with mock understanding. "So this is what they mean by the legendary scumbag."
Rocky frowned. "Hey, I'm not a scumbag. I'm just... emotionally versatile."
Kira turned to Kana, his grin widening. "And you, Kana? Surely you're just here to see the power of my new cards in action."
Kana's face reddened slightly. "Don't flatter yourself! I just wanted to see what an S-rank mission is like."
Gray chuckled, looking between his companions. "We all have the same reason—to participate in an S-rank mission. Now Natsu will be the only one in the guild who hasn't done one."
"Hahahaha! Exactly!" Rocky and Gray laughed, high-fiving each other.
Kira shook his head in amusement. Gray, you really are a simple fool if you think they're here just to make Natsu jealous.
"Still," Rocky said with a sly grin, "I can already imagine how irritated Natsu will be."
"Absolutely," Gray replied. "Wahahaha!"
Kana sighed and shook her head. "You two are so childish."
Kira nodded solemnly. "I agree. When will you two grow up and be as mature as me?" Then, after a beat, he added, "But you're right. Natsu will definitely lose his mind when he hears about this."
The three of them burst into another round of laughter.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Kana finally snapped, delivering a series of punches. "Enough! If you're done laughing, can we get moving? I don't have all day!"
"Ouch!" Kira winced, rubbing his head. "Alright, alright. Let's go. I wasn't expecting you two to join, but I had originally planned for a group of three anyway."
Turning to the water, Kira raised his hand and called out, "Word Magic: Sailboat!"
A shimmering magic circle about five meters in diameter appeared on the water's surface. Slowly, pieces of a sailboat materialized above it, pixel by pixel, until a fully formed vessel splashed into the sea.
"Oh!! That's amazing!" Gray and Rocky exclaimed in unison.
"Your magic is incredible," Gray said, admiration clear in his voice.
"Yeah," Rocky agreed, though his expression suddenly turned mischievous. "But wait... if your magic can create anything, then you could..."
Rocky's face turned red as unsavory thoughts raced through his mind.
"Ahhhh! You're a dangerous man!" he cried out.
Kira stared at him, bewildered. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"Still," Gray said, "this is way more impressive than my magic."
"Of course!" Kira declared smugly.
