章節 79: Shadows of War

The quiet of the estate felt heavy, like the calm before a storm. Dante had hardly left my side since our confrontation in the study. His protectiveness was stifling but also oddly comforting, even as tension brewed between us.

I sat in the expansive library, a room I'd come to think of as my sanctuary. The dim glow of the fireplace cast flickering shadows on the walls. A book lay open on my lap, but the words blurred together as my mind wandered to Viktor's threats.

The door creaked open, and Dante stepped in. His dark eyes softened when they met mine, though the tension in his shoulders betrayed his inner turmoil.

"You're not reading," he said, his deep voice filling the room.

"Hard to concentrate," I replied, closing the book.

He crossed the room in a few strides, sitting beside me on the plush sofa. His hand found mine, warm and reassuring. "You're worried about Viktor."

"I'd be foolish not to be," I admitted. "He's not bluffing, Dante. He's planning something."

Dante's jaw tightened, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. "I won't let him touch you."

"It's not just me," I said, meeting his gaze. "It's you, the family, everything we've built. He wants to destroy it all."

The Strategy Session

By the time night fell, the house was alive with quiet urgency. Dante had summoned his most trusted men, and we gathered in the grand dining room. Maps and documents cluttered the table, lit by the glow of overhead chandeliers.

"Viktor's been playing a long game," Dante said, his voice commanding as he addressed the room. "He's been building alliances, targeting our weak spots. This ends now."

Matteo nodded, his sharp eyes scanning the room. "We've identified some of his key associates. If we take them out, it'll destabilize his operation."

"And send a message," Dante added, his gaze hard as steel.

I leaned forward, my voice steady despite the knot in my stomach. "What about his offer?"

The room went silent. All eyes turned to me, and Dante's expression darkened.

"Elizabeth," he began, a warning in his tone.

"I'm not suggesting we take it," I said quickly. "But we can't ignore the fact that he sees me as leverage. We need to use that against him."

"No," Dante said firmly.

"It's a risk," Matteo said, glancing between us. "But she has a point. Viktor's obsession with Elizabeth could be his downfall."

Dante shook his head, his frustration evident. "I'm not using her as bait."

"I'm not asking for your permission," I said, my voice sharper than I intended.

His gaze snapped to mine, a mix of anger and worry flashing in his eyes. But before he could respond, one of the men at the table cleared his throat.

"She's right," the man said cautiously. "If Viktor sees her as the key to getting to you, we can use that to draw him out."

Dante's hands curled into fists on the table, but he didn't argue further.

The Plan Takes Shape

As the meeting continued, a plan began to take form. It was dangerous, relying on precise timing and coordination. I would attend a gala Viktor was rumored to be targeting, drawing him out of the shadows. Matteo and Dante's men would be positioned to intercept him and his allies.

"It's too risky," Dante said again as the meeting concluded.

I placed a hand on his arm, drawing him aside. "It's the best chance we have to end this, Dante. You know that."

His eyes searched mine, filled with a mixture of anger and desperation. "And if something goes wrong?"

"It won't," I said firmly. "I trust you."

The Night of the Gala

The gala was a glittering affair, held in a sprawling mansion on the outskirts of the city. I wore a sleek black gown, the fabric clinging to my body like a second skin. The necklace Dante had given me sparkled at my throat, a reminder of his presence even when he wasn't by my side.

Dante's men moved through the crowd, blending seamlessly with the other guests. Matteo stayed close, his sharp eyes scanning the room. I sipped a glass of champagne, feigning ease as I waited for Viktor to make his move.

The minutes dragged on, tension coiling in my chest. Every glance, every shadow, felt like a potential threat.

And then I saw him.

Viktor stood near the edge of the room, his sharp suit and commanding presence making him impossible to miss. His eyes locked on mine, and a slow, predatory smile spread across his face.

The Confrontation

"Elizabeth," Viktor said as he approached, his voice smooth and mocking. "You're a vision, as always."

"Viktor," I replied, forcing a calm smile. "Enjoying the party?"

"It just got more interesting," he said, his eyes gleaming with amusement.

Matteo moved closer, his hand hovering near his concealed weapon. Viktor's gaze flicked to him, a smirk playing at his lips.

"No need for hostility," Viktor said. "I'm here to talk."

"You have a strange way of starting conversations," I said, keeping my tone light.

His smile widened. "You're braver than I gave you credit for. But bravery can only take you so far."

I stepped closer, lowering my voice. "And threats can only take you so far, Viktor. You've made your point. Now it's time for you to leave."

His expression darkened, and for a moment, I saw the full extent of his menace. But before he could respond, chaos erupted.

---

The Attack

A shout rang out, followed by the sharp crack of gunfire. Guests screamed, scattering as Dante's men sprang into action. Matteo shoved me behind him, his weapon drawn as he scanned for the source of the attack.

Viktor's smile turned cold. "And so it begins," he said, disappearing into the chaos.

"Elizabeth, stay down!" Matteo barked, pulling me toward an overturned table for cover.

The room became a battlefield, the air thick with smoke and the acrid smell of gunpowder. Dante's men engaged Viktor's forces, the clash of wills turning the elegant gala into a war zone.

---

The Aftermath

By the time the dust settled, the mansion was in ruins. Several of Viktor's men had been captured, but he had slipped through our fingers once again.

Dante arrived, his face a mask of fury and concern. He pulled me into his arms, his grip tight as though to assure himself I was unharmed.

"This isn't over," he said, his voice low and dangerous.

"No," I agreed, my heart pounding. "But we're closer."

As we left the wreckage behind, I couldn't shake the feeling that Viktor was always one step ahead. But if he thought I would back down, he was sorely mistaken.
