章節 3: This idiot

After calming herself down in the restroom, she finally regained her composure and walked out.

The strange man was nowhere to be seen. Tang Mianmian scanned the room and her gaze eventually landed on Yan Youlan, who had just changed into another gown.

She was wearing the exact same dress as Tang Mianmian!

What's more, she looked at Tang Mianmian with a faintly provocative expression, her disdain plain to see.

Tang Mianmian knew it—this woman had done it on purpose.

Even though she had padded herself with tissues, she couldn't compete with Yan Youlan's devilish figure. It was an inherent disadvantage she couldn't overcome, no matter how hard she tried to improve herself.

Yan Youlan deliberately approached her, holding a glass of red wine, a smug smile on her lips. She circled around Tang Mianmian, then slightly turned her head and said, "Even if you wear the same dress as me, you'll always be the supporting role."

Tang Mianmian was immediately reminded of the last time she caught them together. Yan Youlan had said the same thing then:

"Even though you've been with Su Shijie for five years, you're no match for a single beckon from me."

Her fists clenched tightly. It felt like her whole world was suffocating.

But her so-called "best friend" wasn't finished twisting the knife.

"Go back to Nancheng and stay out of my and Shijie's sight forever. He doesn't love you. He was just playing with you, and you were foolish enough to believe him. I honestly feel sorry for you."

After delivering her words, Yan Youlan pretended to lose her balance, spilling her red wine all over Tang Mianmian's dress. She followed it up with a hypocritical gasp, "Oh no, I'm so sorry! It was an accident."

She even took out tissues to dab at her dress as if to help.

Tang Mianmian felt her composure snap completely.

The mist in her eyes blurred her vision, shrouding her world in haze. All she could see was her own injustice.

What had she done to deserve this kind of humiliation from Yan Youlan?

The once-pristine white gown was now stained with red wine, utterly ruined, stripped of its elegance.

Yan Youlan took things further, smearing the wine deeper into the skirt as if to ensure it was beyond salvaging.

"Sorry, I have to give my speech now. Take care of yourself," Yan Youlan said with a smile, triumphant satisfaction gleaming in her eyes as she turned and walked toward the stage.

The stage was set near the swimming pool, the lights reflecting off the water in sparkling patterns. Yan Youlan's deliberate smile seemed all the more dazzling—and infuriating—under the spotlight.

Tang Mianmian felt as if everyone else had faded away. All she could see was Yan Youlan.

It wasn't because she was beautiful. It was because she was angry.

With a loud snap, something inside Tang Mianmian broke.

She thought of all the grievances she had suffered, of Su Shijie's shamelessness, of Yan Youlan's brazen interference…

And of all the years of effort she had put in, only to be repaid with this.

And those countless nights of drinking alone…

Her fists clenched tighter. She strode toward Yan Youlan, her steps quick and decisive, as if afraid she might hesitate.

On the stage, Yan Youlan was delivering her speech with a fake smile.

"Thank you all for coming to my wedding with Shijie. With your blessings, we'll definitely be very happy. Shijie loves me deeply, and I love him too. Our love will shine forever!"

"Hey, who is that?"

A woman suddenly rushed out, causing an uproar among the crowd.

Su Shijie turned around and was stunned to see Tang Mianmian's furious expression and bloodshot eyes. His heart skipped a beat.

"Mianmian…"

Tang Mianmian heard none of it. Her focus locked on Yan Youlan. She shoved Su Shijie and anyone else in her way aside with an unrelenting rage and launched herself at the startled Yan Youlan, sending them both tumbling into the swimming pool.

With a loud splash, water erupted into the air.

The crowd erupted into gasps and cries.

Su Shijie shouted in panic, "Mianmian, you can't swim! Get out of there!"

But at that moment, the groom calling another woman's name instead of the bride's stirred a wave of confusion and curiosity among the onlookers.

Tang Mianmian pushed Yan Youlan down forcefully, refusing to let her surface.

Yan Youlan wasn't a pushover either. She struggled fiercely, her high heels delivering a hard kick to Tang Mianmian's stomach.

Pain shot through Tang Mianmian, making her gasp involuntarily, which caused water to flood into her lungs.

Her mind grew foggy from lack of oxygen, but she held onto Yan Youlan's dress with one hand and the pool's edge with the other, refusing to let go.

She thought bitterly: Am I dying?

If I die, Yan Youlan will go with me.

The thought brought a grim smile to her lips as darkness began to engulf her…

龙夜爵 (Long Yejue) had only stepped away to take a call from his nagging mother. When he returned to the hall, he noticed a crowd gathering near the pool.

"A woman just pushed the bride into the pool, and neither of them has come back up yet," someone whispered in the crowd.

A woman? The bride?

An image of Tang Mianmian's red-rimmed eyes flashed through Long Yejue's mind. His chest tightened as he pushed his way through the crowd with swift, determined strides.

When he saw the figure struggling under the water, he didn't hesitate. He dove in immediately, cursing internally, Tang Mianmian, you idiot!

Tang Mianmian woke to a pounding headache and a body that felt like it had been run over. Her eyes refused to open, and her lips were parched and cracked.

Water… she needed water.

Just as she thought this, she felt something moist against her lips, like someone was dabbing them with a damp cotton swab.

Desperate for relief, she tried to absorb more.

"Tang Mianmian, wake up!"

A deep male voice jolted her ears, and she frowned in irritation. Couldn't they let her enjoy her water in peace?

"If you don't wake up, I'll throw you out the window!"

How could someone be so shameless? She was afraid of heights, even if it was just the first floor!

An Yi, standing nearby, watched in stunned disbelief.

Was this really their normally composed and fearsome boss, Long Yejue?

Threatening a patient?

He must be hallucinating!

"Tang Mianmian!" Long Yejue roared again, his voice low but commanding.

This time, the feeble woman finally opened her eyes, her vision gradually coming into focus on a stark white ceiling.

The harsh smell of disinfectant filled her nose.

Her head throbbed as she tried to lift a hand to rub her temple, only to have it pinned down by a strong hand.

"Don't move! You're on an IV!"

IV? Was she in a hospital?

Turning her head, she saw the man who had stopped her. It was the handsome guy from earlier who had tried to chat her up.

Long Yejue's face was dark with anger, and Tang Mianmian instinctively shrank back.

"Who… who are you?"

"Don't tell me you've forgotten again," he said through gritted teeth, suppressing his fury.

"You never told me your name," she replied, feeling wronged. She had only met him once and didn't even know his name—how could she remember him?

At least he didn't think she had amnesia.

"You must've gotten water in your brain to do something so childish!"

While relieved, he didn't hold back from scolding her.

"What kind of idiot pushes someone else and ends up getting hurt herself while the other person is completely fine?"

"Really?" she muttered in regret. "I should've just drowned her!"

She even weakly swung her fist in mock anger.

Long Yejue felt a vein throb in his forehead. Did this woman even understand the gravity of the situation?

"Tang Mianmian, do you even have a brain?"

Startled by his cold rebuke, Tang Mianmian hesitated. "Yes… I do."

"Do you realize how serious the situation is? If Yan Youlan presses charges against you, you're done for. Do you understand that?"

"Wha… what? Press charges? What for?" She still didn't grasp the severity of the matter.

He exhaled sharply, barely containing his frustration.

An Yi stepped in to explain, "Miss Tang, if Miss Yan accuses you of intentional harm, the consequences could be severe. You might go to jail."

Jail!

The keyword finally sank in. Her face went pale, though it was already bloodless.

"I don't want to go to jail."

"Now you're scared? Why didn't you think of this before you acted?" Long Yejue sneered.

"I didn't think about it," she admitted honestly. If she had known this would be the outcome, she would never have done it.

Long Yejue gave her a look that screamed I knew it.

"Do you regret it now?"

"Is it too late to regret it?" She blinked up at him, seeking an answer.

"What do you think?"

"…"

Tang Mianmian fell silent, biting her lip.

"An Yi, go sound out Yan Youlan's intentions. See what she plans to do," Long Yejue instructed.

"Understood, Young Master," An Yi replied, leaving promptly.

The room's atmosphere grew even heavier after An Yi's departure. Tang Mianmian bit her lip and lowered her head, lost in thought.

Long Yejue made a few calls, seemingly smoothing things over.

She caught snippets of his conversation—something about an old man, a lawyer, and a hospital director who was his friend.

It all sounded lofty and impressive.

Peeking up at him, she noticed his slightly disheveled appearance.

He was still wearing his wedding suit, but his jacket was gone, leaving him in a rumpled shirt and creased trousers.

Even so, it did nothing to diminish his striking looks. He was unfairly handsome.

She scolded herself internally for letting her thoughts wander to such irrelevant matters at a time like this.

With a sigh, she spoke up. "I don't know why you're helping me, but thank you. Whatever happens, let it be. If she wants to sue me, so be it. I'm all alone anyway. I'll serve my time and come out as a new person."

Long Yejue paused mid-task, her words triggering another surge of anger.

"Tang Mianmian, what on earth is in your head?"

He was berating her for being stupid again. She pouted and replied, "What else can I do now that it's already happened?"

His sharp gaze softened slightly as he watched her fidget with her fingers. The reprimands he had planned to give her were swallowed back down.

She must be scared too, he realized.

With a sigh, he softened his tone and said, "It's not entirely hopeless."
