章節 8: Feels like Home

The familiar sight of the property surrounded by the thick Lolo National Forest brought a wave of nostalgic memories. The place had always been a sanctuary for his father, and now it was his responsibility.

As he walked toward the house, the door opened, and Uncle Clyde and Aunt Helen stepped out to greet him, both wearing wide smiles.

"Alex! Welcome back!" Uncle Clyde called out, his voice booming with warmth as he stepped forward to pull Alex into a firm hug.

Uncle Clyde was a man in his 50s, with weathered skin and a sturdy build from years of working the land. His graying hair and neatly trimmed beard gave him a rugged but approachable look. With calloused hands and a quiet, no-nonsense attitude, Clyde was deeply connected to the ranch, managing it with the same care his father had taught him. His sharp blue eyes reflected the wisdom earned from a lifetime.

Though Clyde was a man of few words, he believed in hard work and the simple joys of life, like a quiet evening on the porch or a cold beer after a long day's work. Despite his tough exterior, he always had time for family, offering steady guidance while keeping the ranch running smoothly, ensuring the legacy of their land would endure for years to come.

Aunt Helen was in her late 40s, with a warm and welcoming presence that made anyone feel at home. Her kind hazel eyes and dark hair, often tied back in a ponytail, framed her face in a simple yet graceful way. A practical woman with a soft smile, she was always busy around the ranch, managing the house and helping Clyde with whatever needed to be done. She was the heartbeat of the household, effortlessly balancing the demands of the land with the needs of the family.

Aunt Helen, who was a bit shorter but just as strong, wrapped her arms around Alex too, a comforting embrace that felt like home. "You've grown so much since you were last here. But still the same old Alex," she said warmly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Come on in. We've got dinner ready. Clyde's been cooking up a storm."

Alex quietly released a strand of energy to their bodies, helping them recover from old injuries and other ailments they might have.

Alex couldn't help but grin. "I'm glad to see you both. It's been so long," he said, feeling a rare moment of relaxation as he joined them on the porch. The familiar scent of food wafted from inside the house, mingling with the fresh mountain air.

Uncle Clyde clapped him on the back as they walked inside. "You're just in time. We've got your favorite, beef pot roast. And don't worry, we didn't let the property get too out of hand. Been keeping it up just the way your dad liked it."

Alex glanced around, taking in the cozy warmth of the house. It had always been a bit rustic but comfortable, with familiar old furniture, soft lighting, and a well-worn kitchen that had been the heart of the home for years.

Dinner was simple but satisfying. Aunt Helen's cooking was exactly as he remembered it. Rich, hearty, and full of flavor. They ate slowly, catching up on small talk about the ranch, the weather, and even some gossip from the town.

"How's everything in L.A.?" Aunt Helen asked, breaking a piece of bread and dipping it into the stew. "Everything going okay with the inheritance and all?"

Alex hesitated for a moment, but it felt easier talking to his aunt and uncle. They were family, and their concern wasn't about what he could do with the ranch, but about how he was doing.

"It went pretty well," Alex replied, trying to keep the conversation light. "Thanks to the law firm Dad hired." He looked at Uncle Clyde. "It's good to know you two have been keeping things running smoothly around here, Uncle Clyde. I know this ranch means a lot to you, so I'm asking you to help me continue managing it as it is."

Uncle Clyde nodded. "Of course. Your dad wanted this place kept up. We're happy to help. It's a good life out here, Alex. You don't have to rush into anything."

Alex smiled, grateful for the reassurance. "Please also consider forty percent of the profit from now on as my gratitude."

Clyde and Helen looked at each other and tried to persuade Alex otherwise. "Forty percent is a lot, Alex. Are you sure about it?" Helen said.

Alex gave them a reassuring smile. "Of course, Aunt. I've already thought it through. Besides, your family helped Dad establish this ranch into what it is today. It's only reasonable I give you this much," Alex replied.

After dinner, they all sat on the porch, watching the sun dip behind the mountains, casting a soft golden glow over the land.

"So, what's next for you? What are your plans?" Aunt Helen asked, settling into a chair beside him.

Alex leaned back, staring out at the horizon. He felt the soft energy coursing beneath his skin. But right now, he didn't feel the need to rush. He didn't need to have all the treasures and good things in the world.

"I think I'll take a long vacation first," Alex replied with a smile.

Uncle Clyde chuckled. "You've always been a mature kid despite your age, Alex. You don't need to feel pressured. Move along at your own pace. We're here if you need anything."

"Yes, Uncle," Alex acknowledged.
