"Cora do not make me kill you, my mother is quite fond of you," My mate threatens. Normally one would argue that he could not kill a shapeshifter but she didn't. "Where did you come from?" She asked again.
"I don't know!"
She lifts her hand and points, "They do,"
"Cora," I step forward but she steps into the darkness of the woods. "Darkness you are, begone from me devil back to the rock of fire that is hell on earth."
Then she is gone and I am even more confused. I don't know what's worse, being called a dog or a devil. Tears come to my eyes and I drop to the ground and I whimper. I Curl up on the ground. DaThoren drops next to me. "I'm not going to leave you,"
"Go," I beg. I don't know what I am, but it must be bad. "Leave me here."
"Pet,"
I wail, I knew this all was too good to be true. Things like this don't happen to girls like me.
"DaThoren," Kaggun places his hand on his shoulder,
"I'm not leaving her!" He yells,
Zalor, the youngest moves to the back and grabs Marybelle and drags her to us, and tosses her to the ground. "Start talking or die!"
I can see the fear in her eyes. Zalor has broken her I can tell.
"I don't know anything about her!" She cries,
"Go!" I say again,
"DaThoren, Zalor, and Zim will stay-" Kaggun starts to say,
"I'm staying," Roland speaks,
"Fine, Zalor and Roland will stay, I am taking the rest and going uphill,"
"Fine, go," DaThoren doesn't even look at him as he speaks.
They depart leaving only us.
I peek through my hands at Marybelle, "Please," I beg "What can be worse than a dog or devil, tell me?" I thought both were pretty low.
"I swear I don't know I was very young when my father found you," Her short hair brushes her cheeks as she speaks.
"Where?" Roland asks, "Where did your father find her?"
She shakes her head, "I don't know that either."
Zalor grabs her hair and yanks her back and she cried out. I reach out, "Please don't hurt her!"
His jaw clenches but he lets her go.
"I remember the story," She cries "Fire, lots of fire, and you, you were so small and covered in dirt and mud, and father kept calling you a hatchling."
I stopped crying long enough to listen to her, "I, I recall them saying you were dangerous, that my father should put a collar on you."
He did,
"Beat you,"
He did,
"Train you,"
He did,
"Turn you into nothing more than a dog."
It meant two things. I wasn't human and I wasn't a dog.
"Hatchling?" Roland spoke rubbing his chin "What group calls their young hatchlings?"
"My sons,"
DaThoren picks me up and Zalor snatches up Marybell by the arm. I look at the massive man standing in front of us now. He has white hair and dark skin and green eyes. He looks at me. "Come, now." His voice leaves no room for argument or questions.
"Calm now my Pet, we will be home soon."
Home, that word held no meaning to me. The closer we got up the hill the less I cried. I didn't want them to see me cry. "Welcome home," The man spoke, his voice was congested but deep. I peeked as DaThoren walked on. There are so many males, all strongly built, all tan, and all dressed the same. Some had ink and some did not. The woman shapeshifters were few and far between and all easily mated. They were tall, tan and all had jet-black hair. There were other women, humans, they kept away and to themselves much like our small pack had.
"Are you ok now?" DaThoren asked softly,
No.
I took in a breath and he sat me down and I came face to face with the man who had come for us. I knew instantly that this man was DaThorens grandfather.
"A word," His grandfather's words again leave no room for an argument. "Without her,"
My mate's hand leaves mine, "I will be back,"
Suddenly I am very aware that I am going to be standing alone in the wolf's den. Thunder rolls in the background, the storm is following us and I can't help but think that it's about to get worse.
"Seraphin," Kaggun steps up to me, "Come on, I'll take you to DaThoren's spot."
I look back at the path my mate has taken then back at Kaggun. I lower my head and follow him. He leads me to a built cave if you can even call it that. It's dug into the side of the mountain rock and does not go very deep.
"Stay here until Hal comes back with DaThoren." Hal is their grandfather's name.
I nod and sit in the middle of a pile of furs. I want to rid myself of these clothes. Thunder rolls again, reminding me that soon it will rain and when it rains dirt turns to mud. I'll be good, I'll stay right here for now.
