A couple hours passed before the Viking boy woke up. When his eyes opened I paid close attention to them and saw that they were a beautiful forest green. He looked at me and we locked eyes. I smiled a bit and he started to blush.
"H-hi." He said as he slowly sat up.
"Hello." I said softly while tucking a lock of my hair behind my ear. "How are you feeling? I saw you falling from the top of the cove."
The boy held his head as he answered. "Alright I guess. I-I um..I p-passed out from seeing you..y-ya know..become human..h-how are you able to do that anyway?"
"Turn human? I have been able to do it for as long as I can remember. I am not sure if all Night Furies can do it, though. I..have been alone my whole life. Well..from what I can remember at least." I replied, looking down sadly.
"I'm so sorry to hear that.." The boy said.
I shrugged and messed with my hair. The boy cleared his throat.
"M-my name's Hiccup. Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third."
I looked up with a smile. "My name is Kala."
Hiccup smiled with a light blush tinting his cheeks. "That's a beautiful name. So, you said Night Furies earlier. Does that mean that we were right about what your species is called?"
I nodded. "Yes. Humans get the species names correct every time."
"That's a relief. Would be awful if we were completely wrong about you guys. Um..do you know why you guys raid our village?"
I raised a brow in confusion. "Well, from what I can remember, I try to stay out of those kinds of things. But as for the other dragons' reasons, I do not remember."
"You don't remember?"
I shook my head. "I'm sorry Hiccup. I..don't even know where we are right now."
Hiccup's eyes widened and then he got a sympathetic look on his face. "I'm so sorry Kala..maybe if I never shot you down you would still have your memories.." He looked away from me sadly.
My eyes widened slightly. "Wait. What do you mean you shot me down?"
Hiccup grew nervous as he looked back at me and fiddled with his hands. "W-well..yesterday morning, you and a ton of other dragons attacked my village. During the commotion, I was able to sneak out of the forge that I work in and set up my bola launcher. I waited for you to show up and when you destroyed one of the catapults my village uses during raids, I shot you down." He then looked away again as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Um..after some stuff went down with my dad and the rest of the village, I came out into the forest to look for you..and when I found you I was..g-gonna kill you..a-and take your heart to my dad..but..when I looked into your eyes..I couldn't bring myself to do it.."
I looked down as it sunk in, realizing why I had been tied up in the first place. "So that's why you released me yesterday.."
"Yeah..um..w-why didn't you kill me yesterday? You had the perfect opportunity to and you just..roared at me. Why?" Hiccup asked.
I stiffened up and averted eye contact. "W-well.."
"Was it because I released you?" He asked with a small head tilt and a raised brow.
I played with a strand of my hair nervously, keeping from looking at him.
"That and..well..when I looked into your eyes I.." I fumbled, then released a heavy breath and looked at him. "I saw myself. I couldn't bring myself to do it."
Hiccup looked at me dumbfounded and I gave him a confused look.
"What?" I asked, releasing my grip on my hair and tilting my head to the right.
"Nothing..just..that's why I let you go. I saw myself in you, too. It felt wrong." He said as he pulled his legs up and wrapped his arms around them loosely.
My eyes widened slightly. "Really?"
Hiccup nodded and smiled slightly. "Weird huh?"
I nodded in agreement and looked at a passing cloud as I held my legs.
It was silent between us for a minute or so, then Hiccup broke the silence.
"Okay, I'm curious. How is it that you're hurt in your dragon form, but not your human form? You look perfectly fine." He asked and I looked at him confused.
"What do you mean Hiccup?"
He pursed his lips nervously. "Well..uh..the bola I shot you down with may or may not have..um.."
"May or may not have what Hiccup?" I asked, growing nervous now.
"Uh..well.." He tried, but sighed in defeat as he lowered his head. "It took your left tailfin clean off your tail…"
My eyes widened in shock and I transformed to see if he was telling the truth. When my tail came into my line of sight, I saw that he in fact was telling the truth. My left tailfin was gone. The wound was halfway healed and luckily it wasn't bleeding.
"I'm so so sorry Kala… If I had known I would have done this to you…I wouldn't have shot you down in the first place…"
I crooned then transformed back into my human form, turning my body to face him as I gripped my criss-crossed legs.
"Hiccup, there's no way you could've known this would happen. There's no way I could've known. You were just trying to protect your home." I said sincerely with a soft smile.
He looked up at me with a sad yet confused look. "You're not mad..?"
"Of course not. What's done is done. I'll be okay. It's not the end of the world." I shrugged. "So what if I'm grounded? I can easily survive as a human if I really needed to."
"Yeah, I guess you have a point there." He said, then tilted his head as he noticed something on my left leg. "Huh. Have you always had that scar?"
"What?" I asked with a raised brow, then I looked at the side of my leg.
To my surprise, there was a large scar from under my knee to just above my ankle. It looked completely healed, as though I've had it for years.
"That's so weird…" I mumbled, not understanding where it came from.
Hiccup went silent as he looked at the scar lost in thought, his eyes going glassy slightly. His eyes then widened as something dawned on him.
"It's mirroring your injury on your tail!" He exclaimed in realization.
My eyes widened in realization and I locked eyes with him. "You're right! I didn't even know my body could do that."
"You didn't?" He asked and I shook my head.
"No. There's a lot I'm not sure about when it comes to my kind. Speaking of..just how long had I been attacking your home for? I don't remember ever taking part in a raid before."
Hiccup crossed his arms and rubbed his chin in thought. "If I remember correctly, I think it's been five years. We'd heard of other tribes having Night Fury problems, but never had any ourselves until you showed up about five years ago. Why do you ask?"
My eyes widened and I looked down at my lap as I was stitching together the missing pieces. "Because I think that's the amount of winters that is missing from my memory. Last I recall, I was ten winters old before my memory goes black."
"Wait. So you really don't remember a single raid?" Hiccup asked.
I shook my head. "No. Not a single one. In fact, my memory goes dark up until I woke up from hearing you cut me free yesterday. I'm not sure why though."
"That's so odd. Maybe the crash was worse on you than we thought.." He said with a hint of worry in his voice.
"Maybe, but honestly I think it's for the best. I don't even wanna know the things I must have done to your village or other settlements during those five winters. If anything, I'm glad I can't remember what I did." I admitted with a shrug.
"Yeah, I don't blame you." Hiccup said with a small smile. "So, what will you do now?"
"I..don't know." I said. "Probably find a way off your island as a human and find an island that doesn't have any Vikings."
Hiccup rested his head on his arms in thought. "What if..what if I made you a new tailfin?"
I looked at him in shock. "What?"
"What if I made you a prosthetic tailfin? I could help you fly again and teach you about my culture. Only fair since I'm the reason you're grounded in the first place, right?" He offered with a small smile.
I smiled and hugged him tightly. "That would be wonderful. Thank you, Hiccup."
I felt him hug back just as tight. "You're welcome."
I pulled away and gripped his shoulders. "And in return I shall teach you as much as I can about dragons. As I am sure what I can tell you is vastly different from what you grew up hearing on a day to day basis. Seems like a good trade for knowledge on your culture and my flight returned."
He smiled and nodded in agreement. "That's fine by me. Win-win either way, right?"
I stifled a laugh as I let go of his shoulders and nodded as I rested my hands on the soft ground beneath us. "Yes, yes it is."
Hiccup looked at the sky and sighed when he saw just how low the sun had become.
"I should get back to the village. It's getting late and I probably have Dragon Training again in the morning." He said downcast.
"Dragon Training?" I asked curiously, my head tilting to the right with a raised brow.
He sighed again and nodded. "It's this thing my village does to train new recruits. It's how the new generations learn how to kill dragons. But..I don't want any part in it. Not after meeting you."
I rested a hand on his shoulder and gave him a sympathetic smile. "I'm sorry you have to go through that, Hiccup. But, with what I'm going to teach you, I'm sure you'll do just fine during training sessions. Just not in the way your tribe would like." I said with a small laugh.
Hiccup stifled a laugh and nodded. "Yeah, I guess so huh?"
I nodded with a soft smile as I lowered my hand again as he stood and dusted off his clothes.
"It was nice to meet you, Kala. I'll come by tomorrow, if that's alright with you?" Hiccup asked.
I nodded as I stood. "Yes, until tomorrow Hiccup."
"Until tomorrow." He said with a soft smile as he left the cove.
