I walked down the guild's gleaming corridors, flanked by two bodyguards—Victoria's latest measure of control. Their presence, with their stiff postures and suspicious glances, grated on my nerves. I could feel their eyes on me every second, like they were waiting for me to screw up. Or maybe just waiting for an excuse to report back to her.
"Do you guys ever... blink?" I asked over my shoulder, the sarcasm dripping off my words.
Neither of them responded, their expressions stone-cold. It was almost impressive, really. I sighed, shoving my hands in my pockets. "Cool. Guess small talk's not in the job description."
