Compared to ANBU, the police department's methods seemed weak and overly cautious. In fact, they could even be described as overly gentle.
"Minister, nothing will happen, right?" one of Uchiha Fugaku's subordinates asked nervously.
Fugaku cast a cold glance at his guard, his eyes twitching slightly. "Don't worry. ANBU won't get complaints. And as for us, we're handling things just fine."
The involvement of ANBU in dealing with more stubborn troublemakers had significantly reduced the burden on the police department. However, this came with its own set of problems—namely, the increasing number of detainees with broken limbs now occupying the cells of the police department.
What's more, ANBU's approach was nothing like that of the police department. If someone got injured while being arrested, the police were expected to send them to Konoha Hospital immediately to avoid complaints. ANBU, on the other hand, left the injured as they were—sometimes even ensuring they were interrogated before any treatment could begin.
ANBU's Ruthless Efficiency
The Uchihas in the police department were astonished at the harshness of ANBU's tactics.
"Why are they so ruthless when handling village matters? Aren't these our own people?" some wondered aloud. "Are they this cruel to actual enemies too? Or are we just too naive?"
The disparity in enforcement styles created some confusion and frustration, but the police department had no choice but to endure it. Complaints would inevitably fall on the police department, not on ANBU, which operated in the shadows and remained untouchable.
Shinki Meets the Third Hokage
Shinki, as always, left the bulk of the hard work to others. After delegating tasks to ANBU, he strolled into the Hokage's office.
"Due to the disarmament announcement and its sudden cancellation, there's been unrest in the village," he began. "Some people, perhaps influenced by external forces, have been causing trouble. There've even been cases of drunken ninjas injuring others. Naturally, the police department can't handle all of it, so I had to dispatch ANBU teams to assist. We've made several arrests, though the police department might face an uptick in complaints."
The Third Hokage's face darkened. "I won't tolerate this kind of behavior. Those who incite trouble in the village must be dealt with firmly."
Shinki smiled faintly but knocked on the desk to emphasize his next point. "I understand. Just remember, Hokage-sama, while ANBU doesn't fear complaints, the police department does. Let's make sure they don't take the blame for the village's frustration."
The Third Hokage nodded solemnly, rubbing his temples. He had no intention of shifting the blame onto the police department, knowing it would tarnish both his reputation and the village's trust.
Ichiraku Ramen and Fugaku's Relief
After leaving the Hokage's office, Shinki stretched and glanced at the gloomy sky. "Let's see how long this tension lasts," he muttered, making his way to Ichiraku Ramen.
Sliding open the curtain, he greeted Teuchi with a grin. "Two bowls of ramen, extra meat, extra noodles, and all the side dishes."
Teuchi froze momentarily, surprised by the extravagant order. "Guest, are you sure?"
Shinki nodded, amused. Soon, the rich aroma of ramen filled the shop.
As he ate, Uchiha Fugaku entered and sat beside him. Stirring his ramen absentmindedly, Fugaku finally spoke. "The police department's work hasn't changed much. Thankfully, ANBU is taking on the harsher tasks."
Shinki raised a brow but kept eating.
Fugaku sighed in relief. "With ANBU handling the tough cases, we won't face as many complaints. It's good to have someone like you backing us."
Shinki smirked, his chopsticks pausing midair. "Don't get used to it. I'm not your personal boss."
Fugaku chuckled, though his mind was already strategizing ways to deepen his relationship with Shinki. Even as he finished his meal, his focus was on building a stronger alliance with the influential ANBU leader.
When the meal ended, Fugaku offered to pay, but Shinki had already left, leaving the bill to him.
Uchiha Mikoto's Visit
Returning home, Shinki noticed the door ajar. Changing his shoes, he stepped inside to find Uchiha Mikoto sitting on the sofa.
"My lord," Mikoto greeted, standing quickly and bowing slightly.
Shinki motioned for her to sit. His gaze lingered on her face for a moment, and he couldn't help but notice how radiant she looked. Mikoto blushed under his scrutiny, forcing herself to maintain composure.
"Is your work in the police department going well?" he asked casually.
Mikoto nodded with a soft smile. "Yes, very well. Everyone is very kind to me."
She knew why. As someone tied to Shinki, the clan treated her with deference, even Fugaku showing her utmost respect. It was clear her elevated status came from Shinki's influence.
Seeing her modesty, Shinki smiled and leaned back. "Good. Keep up the good work, Mikoto."
Despite the chaos surrounding the village, Mikoto's calm presence was a comforting constant—one Shinki appreciated more than he cared to admit.
