A thick, dark fog enshrouded the entire Yutai Mountain.
In front of the elder in feathered robes, a human-shaped mass of fog emerged and then swiftly transformed into Chen Xia.
"A newly acquired supernatural art and spell. Just giving it a try." Chen Xia said impassively as he casually brushed the dust off his white robes.
Ever since he entered the Dead Star Region, with each wandering soul he slew, he established a tenuous connection with the region. Gradually, he was able to manipulate these dark, thick fogs.
Perhaps it was because he was the sole living being in the Dead Star Region, combined with a stroke of luck. It did sound somewhat plausible.
The elder in feathered robes' expression grew even more solemn. A cultivator who could form a connection with the Dead Star Region was truly of mysterious origin worthy of deep consideration.
"I wonder if you'd be so kind as to disclose your background. We could sit down and have a proper conversation."
Chen Xia shook his head. "Don't ask for more. I'm here only to kill and will leave once I'm done."
"Is there truly no room for negotiation?" The elder in feathered robes was still reluctant to engage in direct combat and asked again.
"If you let me kill that person, then I might spare a few words with you." Chen Xia's reply was equally blunt. His sole intention was to slay the young acting headmaster.
The elder in feathered robes let out a sigh. "It seems we truly are not on the same path."
He raised both his hands and uttered a low growl, "Rise!"
Chen Xia's body shuddered, and he was instantly suspended in the sky, as if being held captive by Yutai Mountain.
The dark glimmer in his eyes flickered, and his body transformed into a thick fog and disappeared without a trace.
The elder in feathered robes spun around in an instant.
The dense, dark fog nearly filled all the peaks of Yutai Mountain, surging and swirling about.
He was searching for someone!
The elder in feathered robes gritted his teeth, pinched a spell with his hands, his face flushing red, and bellowed, "Mountain and River, Heaven and Earth!"
The entire Yutai Mountain trembled. The formation blazed brightly, repelling the thick, dark fog and transforming it into a brilliant green light that gave chase.
The cultivators of Yutai Mountain emerged one after another. Gazing at the all-encompassing black fog and the elder in feathered robes' display of power, they were all struck with horror.
"Even the grand elder has taken action! Who is the intruder?!"
"Who dares to cause chaos on Yutai Mountain?!"
Some of the elders of the Sea Moving Realm from Yutai Mountain also stepped forward, though they refrained from interfering in the fight. Judging from their combat capabilities, they knew they were somewhat outmatched.
The dark, black fog didn't engage with the brilliant green light. Instead, it swirled around and headed for the horizon.
At the main peak, a wisp of dark fog transformed into Chen Xia's figure, coming face to face with the hiding young acting headmaster and flashing a smile.
"Don't be afraid. It won't be too painful."
He offered this consolation as the young acting headmaster trembled uncontrollably, unable to even utter a cry for help.
"So you cultivators…" Chen Xia shook his head. "You're all at your bravest when picking on the weak. But when it comes to a real fight, you turn out like this. Truly, it's rather disgusting."
The young acting headmaster's throat bobbed. Trembling, he managed to stammer out a plea for mercy, "Don't kill me, please…"
"If I didn't plan to kill you, why would I have come all this way?" Chen Xia retorted. At the same time, he reached out and grabbed the young acting headmaster's head. He didn't want to dawdle.
The elder in feathered robes didn't give him the chance. Appearing in front of Chen Xia, his face no longer showed the previous panic.
"This is the most powerful main peak of the formation. Since you've come, you're not leaving."
"Huh?" Chen Xia raised an eyebrow.
On top of the main peak of Yutai Mountain, a ten-thousand-foot formation sprang up from the ground. At its core, an ancient, deep green spear with mottled bronze rust glinted menacingly!
"In ancient times, it was used to slay immortals. Today, it's more than enough to kill you!"
The elder in feathered robes raised both his hands high, his face flushing red, blood seeping from the corners of his mouth. In a deep, guttural voice, he roared, "Kill!"
The ten-thousand-foot formation trembled. The deep green bronze spear, radiating a terrifying aura, shot into the air, causing the heavens and earth to quake. Its tip was locked firmly on Chen Xia.
Chen Xia furrowed his brow. This was indeed a tricky situation. Since ascending to the Sea Moving Realm, he had never faced such a powerful offensive.
The entire void shuddered.
The bronze spear blasted forward, shattering the void in its path. The cultivators below were crushed and slammed into the ground, unable to get up.
The spear pinned Chen Xia down, slowing his movements and even suppressing his spiritual energy.
"Swap!"
The elder in feathered robes gritted his teeth and shouted again.
In an instant, the young acting headmaster slipped out of Chen Xia's grasp and reappeared behind the elder in feathered robes.
In that split second, the bronze spear struck Chen Xia's chest, sending his body hurtling towards the rear peaks!
Eight out of the nine peaks of Yutai Mountain crumbled. The mountain tops tumbled down, and a stream of light crashed into the ground of Yutai Mountain, shattering nearly half of it.
"Wheeze…wheeze." The elder in feathered robes gasped for breath.
The young acting headmaster watched the stream of light, desperately hoping that Chen Xia was dead.
The cultivators below were even more horrified, rendered speechless.
The dark fog in the sky seemed to have dissipated somewhat, allowing a few strands of light to peek through.
Has the grand elder won?
The young acting headmaster thought gleefully. But just as a smile began to form on his face, a swirling mass of fog suddenly appeared around his neck and quickly materialized into a hand.
"There's no one I've set my sights on that I haven't been able to kill."
A calm voice rang out. The figure in white robes reappeared. His left chest was drenched in blood, staining his white robes crimson.
The elder in feathered robes spun around in an instant, horror etched on his face.
As for the young acting headmaster, despair filled his eyes. He opened his mouth, wanting to beg for mercy, but no words came out.
Because he saw his own body, his entire body.
His head was gone.
Chen Xia held the young acting headmaster's head, looked at the elder in feathered robes, and said one last thing.
"Yutai Mountain, I remember you."
He transformed into a black fog, soared into the sky, and merged with the other black fogs, vanishing in the blink of an eye.
After a long while.
The elder in feathered robes spat blood, forced himself to stand upright, and called out to the elders, "Report to the Azure Sky Sword Sea, quickly!"
Chen Xia's round trip was incredibly swift. In just one and a half months, he was back at the ferry terminal of the Everlasting Life Sect. The wound on his chest hadn't healed and even seemed to be worsening.
Seeing this, Cao Gao was consumed with guilt.
The delicate figure was even more astonished. Just by looking at the wound, he could tell what sort of means the old codger from Yutai Mountain had employed.
What was even more terrifying was that Chen Xia had survived and didn't even seem all that seriously wounded.
Chen Xia didn't say much. He led Cao Gao and set the ferry in motion.
The two of them sped towards the Dead Star Region, drifting along.
Standing at the bow, Chen Xia said impassively.
"After this, sell the ferry or just abandon it. Find a secluded place to live in seclusion. And don't think about dying. After all, it's better to live a wretched life than die."
Cao Gao's expression was complex. Bowing his head, he clasped his fists and said to Chen Xia, "Thank you, senior."
Chen Xia waved his hand. "There's no such thing as senior or not. We just happened to meet by chance and gradually became something of friends."
"Is…is that so?" Cao Gao asked, as if seeking confirmation.
"I think so." Chen Xia nodded.
The journey wasn't long. The Dead Star Region was close.
At the bow, Chen Xia waved to Cao Gao. "Live a long life. Maybe we'll meet again."
Cao Gao nodded. A rare smile appeared on his aged face, even though he knew it was just Chen Xia's comforting words.
There probably wouldn't be any more encounters between them.
Chen Xia took a step forward, leaped off the ferry, and plunged into the Dead Star Region.
Countless wandering souls emerged. Their long, narrow hands reached out, wrapping around him and tugging him deeper into the region, as if trying to drag him down.
Cao Gao opened his mouth, as if about to say something.
Chen Xia placed his index finger against his lips, signaling for silence. His last words were, "Don't call for me."
His figure sank into the depths, as if the starry sky was enfolding him in its embrace.
Over the next hundred years, Cao Gao sold the ferry, took the spirit stones, and went to an extremely remote place.
Sometimes, he would gaze at the stars at night.
But he never pursued anything again.
Until the end of his days.
