章節 16: TREADING ON BLOOD

ADRIANA'S POV

My eyes were wide open and I tossed and turned in bed unable to sleep.

It was almost 2 am and I was unable to still sleep, Vincenzo had indeed not come home but all that did was put me on edge.

What was he scheming this time?

The house was eerily silent and I sat up in bed, unable to take it anymore. I slowly slid on my footwear and stood up.

I needed to get a glass of water, I was feeling more restless and it felt like if I tried to go to sleep, the nightmares would come back.

Opening the door to my room quietly, I slowly went out of the room and lumbered down the stairs, my eyes fixed forward at the house lights which always seemed to stay on.

I walked over to the transparent glass of the house and peeked outside to see men patrolling around the property silently.

So many of them. Even those I couldn't see but I had a feeling that they would be there.

Did they never ease up on the security here?

I sighed and went back to the kitchen, grabbing a bottle of water and pouring a little of its contents into a glass cup, lifting the cup to my lips to drink in the cold liquid when the door creaked open.

I froze, the cup still to my lips as I looked at the door, a figure beginning to form at the doorway where the lights were switched off.

My eyes widened. Vincenzo?

He stopped at the door, blending in with the darkness.

We were locked there in a silent standoff then the lights went off.

I opened my mouth to scream when I felt his presence suddenly beside me, his hands clamping down on my mouth.

Did he seriously just cover my mouth?!

I immediately fought back, thrashing in his hold and clawing at him only to stop to feel his clothes soaked.

The feeling made me immediately stop thrashing about. That wasn't water surely.

He brought his mouth close to my ear, breathing down my neck. "Stop moving Tesoro" He breathed heavily, his hand still shut my mouth.

I quieted down and he let me go after a second thought. I quickly stumbled back and looked at him, my eyes wide and trying to see him properly in the dark.

"What?" I heard him ask followed by the sound of him grabbing the bottled water and chugging it down.

"Where were you…?" That was the first question that spilled out of my big mouth.

"Work." He said simply, his tone sounding distant and his legs already beginning to prowl towards the stairs.

It was like he didn't want me to see him and that piqued my interest.

"Why are your clothes soaked?" I asked, looking down at my hands which were still damp with something I didn't still know.

He didn't answer and he was already climbing back up the stairs.

I quickly moved towards the light switch but he stopped his ascent at the same time.

"Don't" he warned.

I froze wondering how he knew what I wanted to do.

I needed to see what was on my hand.

"What is on you?" I asked, my voice shaking no matter how much I tried to steady it.

"One thing you need to learn is that trying to find something out about me will only lead to destruction," he said, his voice a calm sound from the stairs.

"Then why won't you let me at least switch on the lights?" I asked, my hands already reaching out to the light switch again when he replied.

"Do you seriously want to hate me?" His voice was chilly, cold but there was a sense of annoyance in it. The murderous kind.

"More than I already do? Yes, I'm game" I spelled out for him.

He didn't answer. "Satisfy your curiosity but I don't want to hear a sound," He said.

That was it for me.

I quickly flipped the light switch on but he was no longer there. It was like he had simply disappeared off the stairs and for a brief moment, I wondered if I had imagined him but the sound of the room door closing upstairs made me know that I wasn't imagining things.

He was behaving very weird and I knew that I wasn't going to be getting any sleep tonight. He was home again and so was my sleep thrown out the window again.

I sighed and my eyes flickered over to the bottle of water that he had drank from on the counter.

My brows furrowed at it and I walked over to it, noticing the dark red imprints on it.

What the hell was that?

I picked up the bottle and stared at it, wondering what the hell it was.

The sound of the shower running reached me and I looked up at the stairs.

That was when my eyes caught it.

The footprints on the floor leading up to the room.

My hands around the bottle tightened and I took a shaky step forward, wanting to see. Wanting to know.

Was that mud?

My blood froze in my veins. There were two options in my head for what that could be. Mud or blood. Whatever it was, he didn't bother to clean it up, it was like he didn't mind me seeing it and a gut feeling made me know that it was not mud.

It couldn't be.

The bottle in my hand dropped to the ground, the contents splashing against the floor but I didn't care, I raised my hands up to look at my palm where I had touched him and it wasn't clean.

My hands were caked in dry blood.

I felt bile rush up in my throat and I resisted the urge to throw up.

For it to be fresh, it meant it was his blood and I knew that he hadn't just cut himself, he had probably killed someone. People.

One look at the stairs again and I did the first thing that came to mind.

I screamed.
