As the sun rose the next day, Nila was already at work alongside Laila, Darius, the noblewoman, and a small army of palace staff. The grand hall was a flurry of activity as silk banners were hung, tables were adorned with crystal centrepieces, and chandeliers glimmered overhead. Musicians began practice in the corner, and they started with the final guest seating arrangement.

With his characteristic charm, Darius eased between the ladies, occasionally tossing flirtatious remarks and lighthearted jokes, easing some of the tension in the air. But despite his playfulness, there was a hint of something else beneath his smile.

''Greetings, the king is looking for you, Commander,'' a servant came to fetch Darius in between the preparations.

As Nila supervised the floral arrangements, her curiosity peaked wondering why Darius was being summoned.
