章節 295: Chapter 293: World Athletics Championships

As everyone celebrated Dong's successful leap, Su Sheng stood nearby, his eyes wide with shock. He was a professional sprinter and could tell how fast Dong had been when he sprinted towards the car.

Once everyone had calmed down, Su Sheng approached Dong and asked, "Dong, what's your personal best in the 100-meter sprint?"

"100-meter sprint?" Dong looked at Su Sheng and smiled. "I don't know, but I'm sure I can't beat you."

Dong hadn't undergone any physical tests since his rebirth. In college, his best 100-meter time was 11.07 seconds, and he had undoubtedly improved since then, but he didn't know by how much.

"Dong, your explosiveness is incredible. I think you can run the 100-meter dash in under 10.3 seconds," Su Sheng said.

"No way," Dong laughed. "I'm a basketball player, not a sprinter. Running it in under 11 seconds would be impressive enough."

He was being modest, as he genuinely believed he could run the 100-meter dash in under 10.3 seconds.

Erik Spoelstra egged them on, "Why don't you guys have a race then?"

Since they were already at the stadium, with a ready-made 100-meter track, a sprint race would be much safer than leaping over a car.

"Sure!"

Su Sheng immediately agreed, eager to show off his skills to Dong.

As the current Asian record holder in the 100-meter dash, Su Sheng's personal best was just outside the 10-second barrier. If he could race against Dong, it might give him the extra motivation he needed.

"A sprint race?"

Dong was about to decline when he heard the system's voice in his mind.

[Mission: Race Su Sheng in a sprint. Failure punishment: Lose a skill pack permanently.]

"What skill pack?" Dong asked.

[Random.]

"It's just a race, does it matter who wins or loses?"

[No.]

Dong realized that the system was about to reward him with a gift, as this task was too easy to complete. Previously, the system had given him a 'deep breath' task, and the reward was a 'stamina potion.'

"Alright, let's do it then," Dong agreed, stretching his arms.

Stephen Curry asked the translator nearby, then walked over and said, "A sprint race? Count me in."

"Sure," Dong nodded, then looked around, "Anyone else want to join?"

"Me! Me!"

Jared Dudley raised his hand and walked over.

Dudley and Curry were professional athletes, and although they weren't sprinters, they were no slouches when it came to speed.

Zhang Yang also showed interest and, after exchanging a glance with Ge Qian, walked over and said, "Count us in too."

This was getting exciting.

Dong, Su Sheng, Curry, Dudley, Zhang Yang, and Ge Qian were going to race in a 100-meter sprint.

Everyone quickly moved to the track, clearing the way. A professional starting pistol and timer were ready.

Spoelstra, noticing the varied attire of the participants, asked, "Do you guys want to change into proper gear?"

Among the six, Dong was wearing basketball shoes, while the others had on casual shoes. It was August, and apart from Ge Qian in camouflage pants, the rest were in casual shorts.

Running in this attire would undoubtedly affect their performance.

"No need to change," Dong waved his hand dismissively. "It's just a fun race, no need to be so formal."

"On your marks, get set..."

Spoelstra stood by the track, holding the starting pistol and giving the commands, his Chinese pronunciation leaving much to be desired.

From their starting positions, it was clear that Su Sheng was the most professional. The others tried their best, but the differences were noticeable.

"Bang!"

At the sound of the pistol, the six participants burst out like arrows.

This was the first time Dong had given his all in a 100-meter sprint.

"Go! Go! Go!"

Cheers of encouragement filled the air.

Su Sheng had the fastest start and maintained his lead for the first thirty meters, which wasn't surprising. However, what happened next left everyone on the sidelines in awe.

After thirty meters, Dong began to close the gap with Su Sheng. By the seventy-meter mark, Dong had overtaken him!

"Whoosh!"

Dong crossed the finish line first.

He was followed by Su Sheng...

Then Zhang Yang...

Then Ge Qian...

Then Dudley...

Curry came in last.

The timer read 10.07 seconds!

Everyone's jaws dropped in disbelief when they saw the time on the timer. Dong had never trained for sprinting, and his starting position wasn't even the most optimal. Yet, he had run a 100-meter dash in 10.07 seconds while wearing basketball shoes!

"I knew it..."

Su Sheng, after seeing Dong's time, took a while to regain his composure.

"Is the timer accurate?" Spoelstra asked, stunned.

This question was unnecessary, as there was a professional sprinter on the track. Su Sheng, wearing casual shoes, had run a 10.19-second 100-meter dash, which was an impressive time in itself and proved the accuracy of the timer.

Curry was even more shocked.

He was a professional athlete, yet he had finished last in the 100-meter dash. What bothered him the most was that he had lost to Zhang Yang, a celebrity, who had run a 10.37-second 100-meter dash.

Out of the six participants, four had run under 11 seconds.

Apart from the last two, Curry and Dudley, Ge Qian had also run a 10.93-second 100-meter dash.

Once Su Sheng had recovered from his surprise, he exclaimed with joy, "Dong, you can definitely run under 10 seconds! You could become the first Asian athlete to break the 10-second barrier!"

"I didn't know I was this fast," Dong said, still in disbelief.

He hadn't undergone any physical tests since his rebirth, so he had no idea what his limits were. Now he had a better understanding of his speed...

Su Sheng was ecstatic, "The World Athletics Championships are being held this year, Dong. You still have a chance to participate!"

"World Athletics Championships? When is it held? Can I join?" Dong had never considered participating in such an event, but since he had a real chance of breaking the 10-second barrier, he was more than willing to represent his country.

"Huaxia is hosting the World Athletics Championships this year. There are two ways to qualify," Su Sheng explained. "The first is based on world rankings, but since you don't have any honors in major athletics events, this option is not feasible.

"The second option is to achieve the qualifying standard, which is 10.12 seconds for the men's 100-meter dash. Dong, you can definitely do it!"

"I even think that if Zhang Yang prepares well, he could also reach this standard." Su Sheng added, impressed by Zhang Yang's 10.37-second time.
