Dylan smiled, stepping toward her, one step at a time. "Why can't I be here? Can't I visit my father-in-law?"

Ava's heart skipped a beat, the word 'father-in-law' echoing in her ear. It was the first time she heard him acknowledging her father as his father-in-law. Her mouth fell open without her knowledge as she gawked at him. 

Dylan found her appearance amusing. He took another step closer to her and leaned over, whispering in her ear, "Why are you so surprised? Did you miss me?"

Ava's racing thoughts came to a halt. She stepped back, her face flushing. She looked away, nervously tucking her hair behind her ear. "I-I was wondering how you managed to come here. Didn't you say you have meetings to attend to?"

"Yes, I had, but I postponed the meetings," he replied flippantly, straightening his back and slipping his hands into his pockets.
