"So, which squad is going to repair the sensor?" Furahashi asked.
"That's the issue. A squad can't go. We need one person."
Furahashi's brows furrowed. "You mean a sacrifice?"
The man said nothing.
"Why a sacrifice when a squad can handle it?" Furahashi barked.
"Calm down, Furahashi," Soyo interjected.
"The whole squad would be wiped out. We'd lose everyone," the man explained.
"I don't follow," Soyo said.
He handed out data sheets to the captains. "This was taken minutes before the sensor went offline. The lab is surrounded by a horde. With the weapons and men we have, we can't win in a direct fight. We plan to use the underground tunnel to the lab. It's also crawling with Nephilims, but fewer. They can be evaded. But sending a squad with insufficient firepower is sending them to their deaths."
"I agree with him," Kazushi said.
"Same," Masaiko added.
"What makes you so sure one person can pull it off?" Furahashi asked.
The man pulled out a small device. "This is a flashbang grenade, but it only works on Nephilims. It has a three-kilometer radius."
"Three kilometers? That's insane," Furahashi said.
"Yes. The individual will use it in the tunnel to disorient the Nephilims long enough to get through and repair the sensor. After that…"
"They're left to die," Furahashi scoffed. "This is madness. I won't stand for it. And remember, no ranger leaves this bunker without my say. I'm in charge of Hokkaido Base."
"It doesn't have to be a ranger—"
Furahashi grabbed Masaiko by the neck, lifting him off the ground. "You want to send civilians?"
Kazushi grabbed Furahashi's arm. "That's enough, man."
"Let go of me," Furahashi said coldly.
"Sorry, but I can't. You need to let go of Captain Masaiko first."
Their grips tightened, and Masaiko's face reddened, tears forming in his eyes.
"Enough! Stop this nonsense!" Soyo shouted, trembling. "Our enemy is out there, not each other."
Furahashi and Kazushi locked eyes. Furahashi's gaze was fierce; Kazushi's was calm. Finally, Furahashi released Masaiko, who fell to the ground, coughing.
Furahashi turned to Soyo. "Whose side are you on? The side that sacrifices lives, or the side that saves them?"
Soyo averted her gaze, unable to answer.
"Thought so," Furahashi muttered.
"Mayu!" he called.
"Yes, Captain." She glanced briefly at Soyo before following Furahashi out of the room.
Making decisions like this wasn't easy. Taking a life to save many may sound simple, but living with that choice wasn't.
