章節 7: Unraveling the Past
Dr. Rachel Lee stepped into my apartment, her eyes scanning the cluttered space. "Ethan, what's going on? I've been trying to reach you." Her voice was laced with concern, her brow furrowed.
I gestured to the scattered papers and notes. "I met someone. Nova. She claims to know about my parents' research." Rachel's expression shifted from curiosity to alarm.
"Nova?" she repeated, her voice low. "I've heard whispers. A whistleblower, possibly? Someone who's been tracking the conspiracy." Rachel's gaze intensified. "But we need to be cautious. In this world, allegiances are fluid. Trust no one too quickly."
I nodded, my mind racing. "What do you know about the Eclipse Project?" Rachel hesitated, glancing around the room before responding.
"Your parents' research was groundbreaking. But it threatened powerful interests. If you're seen with this information..." She trailed off, the implications clear. I felt a chill run down my spine.
Rachel moved closer, her voice barely above a whisper. "We need to get you out of here. Now. You're not safe." I nodded, grabbing my backpack.
As we stepped into the night, Rachel handed me a burner phone. "Use this. We'll stay in touch." I nodded, tucking the phone into my pocket.
We walked in silence, the city's neon lights casting long shadows. Rachel led me to a nondescript sedan, the engine humming to life as we climbed in.
"Where are we going?" I asked, buckling my seatbelt.
"Someplace safe," Rachel replied, her eyes locked on the rearview mirror. "For now."
As we drove through the city, I realized the stakes were higher than I'd ever imagined. My parents' research had unleashed a maelstrom, and I was now caught in its center.
