章節 40: Past Revealed, Future Forged

The next day, in the afternoon, Honami knew the time had come to face the rumors that loomed over her. The looks filled with questions and suspicions that her classmates directed at her were impossible to ignore. Despite the doubts that plagued her mind, Honami decided she could not continue hiding. She refused to accept Kayden's help, convinced that this problem had to be solved on her own.

When classes ended, the classroom was filled with palpable anticipation. The glances, the whispers, the malicious smiles... everything weighed heavily on Honami's shoulders, but she remained calm. She knew she had to confront her classmates and, more importantly, her own past.

Just as she was about to speak, Ryuuen appeared in the doorway, accompanied by his usual group of followers. He wore a smug smile, as if he were about to enjoy a show he had planned himself.

"Well, well, look who's here," Ryuuen said mockingly, a twisted smile on his face. "It seems the 'criminal' has finally decided to show her face. This is going to be interesting."

Kanzaki, who was nearby, stepped forward to defend her.

"Ryuuen, enough with the nonsense," he replied, his tone firm. "This doesn't concern you."

"Nonsense?" Ryuuen laughed. "I don't think so. If it's not true, why didn't she come out to speak before? When the river sounds, it carries water, right?" His eyes sparkled with malice.

The whispers grew louder, and Honami felt the pressure in every corner of the classroom. She knew she could no longer avoid the topic. Taking a deep breath, she let the silence settle and then stepped forward.

"It's true." Her voice resonated in the classroom, silencing the murmurs in an instant. "The rumors have some truth to them. A few years ago, I made a mistake. I shoplifted."

The shock among her classmates was immediate. Gasping, incredulous looks, and expressions of surprise filled the room. The tension in the air was palpable, but Honami did not waver.

"I didn't do it out of greed or selfish desire," she continued, her voice firm even though her heart raced. "I did it because my little sister wanted a necklace that our family couldn't afford. I just wanted to see her happy. But... what I did was wrong, and I knew it from the moment I did it. I got caught, was punished, and accepted my responsibility."

Her confession left a heavy silence in the classroom. The students didn't know how to react. Some were still in shock, while others were starting to whisper again. But Honami wasn't finished.

"I accept that I made a mistake, and I've done everything I can to correct it since then. I can't change the past, but I've worked to become a better person. And I know that doesn't define me completely."

At that moment, the whispers ceased, interrupted by a figure pushing through the crowd. It was Sakayanagi, the leader of Class B, known for her ability to manipulate with words and her sharp mind. Her smile was sweet, but her eyes displayed an unyielding coldness.

"How touching, truly touching," Sakayanagi said in a soft voice, but her words were like blades. "However, no matter how noble your intention was, a crime is a crime. It doesn't matter the reason. You will always be a thief, Ichinose-san. And that's not something that can be erased with mere apologies."

Sakayanagi walked slowly around the classroom, observing everyone around her as she spoke. Her tone was calculating, aimed at sowing doubt.

"How can you trust someone who has committed a crime, no matter the reason? Maybe you did it today for your sister, but tomorrow... Who knows? Once you cross that line, it's hard to go back. Trust is fragile, and you've broken it."

Several students began to nod, absorbed by her words. The tension rose again, but Honami wasn't going to let Sakayanagi's manipulation break her.

"It's true, Sakayanagi-san," Honami said, unwavering. "I committed a crime. I don't deny it. But that doesn't determine who I am now or who I will be in the future. My mistake doesn't define my worth or my ability to be a good leader. I can accept my past and learn from it, but I won't let it destroy me. And I won't let you or anyone else use it to destabilize my class."

The classroom fell silent as Honami spoke. She was not only confronting Sakayanagi but also sending a clear message to everyone present: she would not allow her mistake to be used as a weapon against her. Kayden, beside her, nodded with determination.

"honami," Kayden said clearly, "we all make mistakes. What matters is how we face them. Today, you've shown that you are brave and honest. That is worth more than any rumor. You have my support."

Some of her classmates began to nod, showing signs of approval. Although the air remained tense, Honami could feel that her sincerity had touched several of them.

Seeing that her words had not achieved the effect she desired, Sakayanagi flashed a small smile.

"I suppose time will tell, Ichinose-san," she said with unsettling calmness. "But rest assured, not everyone will forget so easily." She paused, looking at the students around her. "After all, reputation is something difficult to rebuild. Good luck with that."

With those words, Sakayanagi turned and left the classroom with elegant strides, followed by her group. Ryuuen also left, albeit with a mocking smile on his lips. He seemed to enjoy the drama, but he knew that for now, the situation was not going to turn in his favor.

When everything fell silent, Honami took a deep breath. The weight she had felt at the beginning seemed to lighten. She knew there was still much to do, and that not all her classmates would support her immediately, but she had taken the first step. She had faced her past, and now the future was in her hands.

Kanzaki was the first to break the silence, with a serious yet warm expression.

"Ichinose... we all have mistakes in our past, but that doesn't define who we are today. What matters is what you've done since then and how you've treated us. I still trust you completely." He said firmly, looking her directly in the eyes.

Mako energetically nodded, trying to break the tension with her usual positivity. "Exactly! What you did doesn't change all the good you've done for the class. You are our leader, and you've always been there when we needed you. Nothing is going to change that." She smiled, giving her a light punch on the arm as a sign of encouragement.

Even Hamaguchi, who usually was more reserved, stepped forward. "For me, what matters is the present. If you did that for your sister, I understand. You are a good person, and you have proven that time and again. You don't have to apologize." His voice was calm but firm.

Finally, Honami looked around, surprised by the support of her classmates. Although the revelation weighed on her heart, their words and trusting looks gave her the strength she needed to stand firm. With a lump in her throat, she could only nod in gratitude.
