"Alright!"
Xia Yu nodded.
Old John slightly inclined his head and then turned his gaze away, instructing Niu Bijian, "Bring in the documents and call in Lawyer Federer as well."
"Wang Qi, you should go out and bring the lawyer in too!"
Xia Yu instructed Wang Qi next to him.
Seeing that Xia Yu had also brought in a lawyer, Old John's expression changed slightly, sensing something was off. However, his fatigue from the earlier grueling negotiations made it difficult for him to think clearly. At his age, both his physical and mental energy were waning, and he found himself mentally exhausted.
But it didn't matter; regardless of Xia Yu's schemes, Old John had achieved his primary goal, which was already enough. It was best to finalize the contract quickly to avoid any unforeseen complications.
After Niu Bijian and Wang Qi left, the room was left with only Old John and Xia Yu. They sat across from each other in silence, as if neither wanted to speak, unsure what to say.
Xia Yu didn't mind and took an interest in examining the room's decorations, as if trying to appreciate their value.
During this awkward wait, the sound of footsteps approaching grew closer.
Soon, Niu Bijian and Wang Qi returned with a lawyer each.
Next, Niu Bijian prepared the contract, Xia Yu filled in the number of shares, Old John entered the transaction amount, and additional terms were added.
After some busy work, the preliminary contract was signed.
However, to have full legal effect, the stock transaction and fund transfer needed to be completed the next day before the contract could be formally executed.
Both parties agreed to go home and prepare for the night. They would meet at the bank at 8:30 AM the next morning for the exchange of money and shares.
With the matter settled, Old John and Niu Bijian didn't want to stay any longer. They bade farewell to Xia Yu and left, while Xia Yu and Wang Qi returned home.
"Boss, you're truly amazing! You definitely deserve an Oscar for Best Actor!"
After sending the lawyers away and with no one else around, Wang Qi finally spoke with admiration on his face.
He had watched Xia Yu's confrontation with Old John throughout and, if he hadn't known the full story, Wang Qi would have been completely outwitted by Xia Yu.
But Old John was not just anyone; he was the head of Hong Kong's top financial consortium. The difference was immense! To see such a powerful figure in Hong Kong completely played by Xia Yu was truly impressive.
"Haha, what's the point of an Oscar? I'd rather be the president of the Oscar Film Association and give out awards to whoever I want!"
Xia Yu laughed heartily, feeling a bit smug. The sense of accomplishment from outwitting a major figure was far greater than dealing with an ordinary person.
"By the way, get the acquisition status of Wharf Holdings sorted out as soon as possible. After we get the money tomorrow, let's give E-He Consortium a surprise!"
Suddenly thinking of something, Xia Yu instructed.
Wang Qi grinned with anticipation and nodded immediately, "Understood!"
Earlier, Old John had forced Xia Yu to agree not to maliciously target E-He Consortium's companies. Xia Yu had reluctantly agreed.
But come tomorrow, just when Old John thought things were settled, he would discover an even bigger surprise awaiting him.
At that moment, Old John would undoubtedly be furious. Just imagining it was exciting!
"I wonder how many shares Liu Tianci managed to acquire for me today. I'm looking forward to it…"
Recalling this afternoon's actions, where he had Liu Tianci use HSBC's name to acquire shares from minor shareholders of Wharf Holdings, Xia Yu was quite eager.
The plan to acquire Wharf Holdings had been kept secret for so long, and it was finally time to launch the final assault. Xia Yu used HSBC's cover to push for more stock acquisitions.
He hadn't used Jiuding Securities' name for the acquisitions but hid behind HSBC.
Given the current volatile state of Hong Kong's financial market, Jiuding Securities was like a glaring beacon, with every move under intense scrutiny.
If he had used a direct approach to acquire shares from Wharf Holdings' shareholders, the objective would have been obvious, causing a huge uproar and possibly jeopardizing the negotiations tonight.
It was better to hide behind HSBC and deal with the added transaction fees.
Compared to the massive benefits from acquiring Wharf Holdings, those fees were negligible!
Moreover, with HSBC's influence, there was a greater chance of acquiring the most shares.
The more shares acquired, the greater the advantage for Xia Yu's attack the next day, and the more money he could save!
"Soon, after tonight, we'll have a great harvest!"
Xia Yu squinted his eyes, thinking to himself.
---
As the saying goes, "Two flowers bloom, each on its own branch."
Let's turn to Old John, who, after achieving his goal, breathed a huge sigh of relief. Checking the time, he quickly instructed his driver to rush home.
Tonight, he not only had the negotiation with Xia Yu but had also scheduled a meeting at home, where his son was currently hosting guests.
Indeed, upon returning home, he saw several elderly figures seated in the living room. His son, Henry Cazec, and Charles Cazec were attending to them.
Seeing Old John return, Henry and Charles visibly relaxed and quickly stood up to greet him.
"Good evening, everyone. Sorry for coming back late!"
Old John said apologetically before taking his seat.
"It's alright. How did it go?"
Norman Shiahwai, the oldest leader of the Taikoo Group, inquired.
Seated on either side were Qi Dezun, the head of Hutchison Whampoa, and John Madden, the leader of Wheelock and Company, who also cast their attentive gazes toward Old John.
"We reached an agreement!"
Old John did not hide the truth, nodding slightly.
Since the negotiations involved E-He Machinery Group, which was crucial, Old John did not see the need to keep it a secret.
"Congratulations! You can relax now!"
Norman Shiahwai congratulated, knowing how tough it had been for John Cazec recently. Retaining E-He Machinery Group was vital for E-He Consortium.
John Madden and Qi Dezun also extended their congratulations.
"Congratulations!"
"Ah, not worth celebrating. The cost was too high!"
Old John shook his head with a bitter smile, feeling unsettled.
"What were the terms? What's the result?"
Qi Dezun asked, curious.
"One hundred twelve HKD per share…"
Old John outlined the terms of the negotiation but did not elaborate further, as he felt quite aggrieved by the experience. He only mentioned the price and the amount of shares involved.
Hearing this, even Norman Shiahwai and the others, despite their age, were visibly moved.
The total cost was close to 1.5 billion HKD!
This exceeded the pre-negotiation total market value of E-He Machinery Group, which was only 1.1 billion HKD at that time.
Of course, everyone knew that these past two years had seen a downturn in the stock market, and the stock price didn't reflect E-He Machinery Group's true value.
But this price was still considered extremely high!
E-He Consortium had suffered a tremendous loss!
The three exchanged glances, their feelings very mixed.
