In the afternoon, after spending two hours at the estate, Xia Yu felt bored. Not wanting to head back to downtown London, he decided to take a stroll around the area with his group.
While he had familiarized himself with the interior of the estate that morning, he hadn't yet explored the surroundings of his new home.
Taking advantage of the quiet days, he decided to explore the area thoroughly.
The group walked along the road. Since they were in the suburbs, there were fewer houses and mostly open spaces, so they didn't encounter many people. Occasionally, they met some locals, and Xia Yu greeted them politely.
Before long, they reached the edge of a river where a steel bridge spanned across it.
Xia Yu noticed a man with black hair standing on the bridge. Feeling a sudden impulse, Xia Yu found himself walking toward the man.
However, before he could take more than a few steps, he was startled to see the man on the bridge suddenly jump into the river. Xia Yu's first reaction was that the man intended to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge!
"Quick, go save him!"
Xia Yu shouted and immediately ran toward the riverbank. Hearing Xia Yu's command, Yan Shining ran even faster than Xia Yu, while Li Wuming charged ahead and reached the bridge. Without hesitation, he dived into the water at the spot where the man had jumped.
As Li Wuming jumped into the river, Xia Yu also reached the bridge. However, what he saw next left him somewhat dumbfounded.
The man who had jumped into the river was swimming and was making his way toward the shore. From his swimming technique, it was clear that he was quite skilled.
Was the man not actually trying to commit suicide?
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Xia Yu realized he had misunderstood the situation. Nevertheless, he maintained his composure and continued walking toward the riverbank.
On the shore, the black-haired man had climbed out of the water, and Li Wuming followed closely behind, also emerging from the river. After giving the man a nod, Xia Yu looked at the black-haired man.
Even though the man was soaked and his hair was disheveled, his face was still visible. Xia Yu saw that the man had an Asian face, probably in his twenties, but his exact nationality was unclear.
However, judging by his height of over 1.75 meters, Xia Yu guessed he was unlikely to be from Japan.
After climbing ashore, the young man saw Xia Yu and his group surrounding him and felt quite embarrassed. While in the water, he had heard Li Wuming's shouts and realized that he had caused a misunderstanding. Others thought he had jumped into the river, so they came to rescue him.
This made him feel grateful but also quite embarrassed.
"Thank you! I'm really sorry for the trouble!"
The young man spoke in Chinese.
Xia Yu's eyes lit up, pleasantly surprised to find that the man was indeed Chinese. Any discomfort he had felt dissipated immediately. It was always a joy to meet fellow countrymen abroad.
"It's nothing. I thought you were trying to commit suicide. It's good to know that wasn't the case!"
Xia Yu said with a smile.
The young man's face showed embarrassment, but it quickly turned to relief and happiness.
"No, it's not like that. I accidentally dropped a necklace into the river and was worried it would sink and be lost, so I jumped in to retrieve it. Fortunately, I managed to grab it in time."
The young man explained, then showed his right hand. Xia Yu saw a necklace there, clearly of considerable value based on its craftsmanship and materials. It made sense that the young man was so eager to retrieve it.
"By the way, my name is Wu Hongyi. Wu as in Wu Zixu, and Hongyi as in the integrity and courage in 'scholar must be steadfast.' I'm a Chinese national living in the UK. It's a pleasure to meet you!"
Wu Hongyi looked around at everyone, then focused on Xia Yu, who seemed to be the central figure, and introduced himself.
"I'm Xia Yu, and these are my friends Yan Shining, Li Wuming, Hou Sheng, and Li Qian. We're all from Hong Kong and have only just arrived in the UK."
Xia Yu introduced his friends, who all nodded with smiles when their names were mentioned.
"Since you're fine now, we'll be on our way. You're all wet. You should go home and change clothes!"
Xia Yu said, intending to leave.
Although meeting a fellow Chinese had brightened Xia Yu's mood, seeing Li Wuming's drenched appearance reminded him of priorities. He decided against extending the interaction with Wu Hongyi.
"Really sorry for the trouble. My home is nearby. How about coming over for tea and to change clothes? It's just around the corner."
As Xia Yu and his group were about to leave, Wu Hongyi quickly spoke up.
Xia Yu raised an eyebrow, surprised that Wu Hongyi's home was so close. It seemed they would have future interactions.
"No need. My home is not far from here."
Xia Yu declined with a smile, pointing in the direction they had come from.
Wu Hongyi was a bit surprised. The area was sparsely populated, and he had never seen Xia Yu and his group before, so he guessed they had just moved in.
Since Xia Yu's home was nearby, Wu Hongyi decided not to press further, knowing he'd have other chances to express his gratitude. He no longer insisted.
"Alright then, thank you again!"
Wu Hongyi expressed his gratitude once more.
Xia Yu smiled and nodded, then led Li Wuming and the others away.
"Ding-dong, ding-dong!"
Not long after returning home, and as Li Wuming was changing clothes, Xia Yu heard the doorbell ring. Everyone in the living room immediately looked toward the door, and Li Wuming and Yan Shining became alert.
Who could be ringing the doorbell?
Xia Yu frowned slightly and signaled Hou Sheng to open the door. Hou Sheng promptly walked to the front door.
When the door opened, a figure appeared. Seeing this person, Xia Yu and the others relaxed slightly. It was Wu Hongyi, now dressed in dry clothes, with his hair dried and holding some gifts.
Xia Yu and the others stood up and approached Wu Hongyi, who was smiling at the door.
"I didn't expect you really lived here. Looks like I didn't get the address wrong!"
Wu Hongyi said with a smile.
"Come in. No need to be so polite, bringing gifts."
As the guest was also Chinese, Xia Yu was naturally very warm and went forward to take the gifts from Wu Hongyi's hands, inviting him inside.
Wu Hongyi did not stand on ceremony, entering and sitting down on a stool. Li Qian immediately went to pour tea for him.
"Mr. Wu, how did you find out we were living here?"
Xia Yu asked, with Yan Shining and the others also curious, their eyes fixed on him.
Wu Hongyi was not uncomfortable under their gaze. He laughed and said, "We're all Chinese, so there's no need for formality. Just call me Hongyi. It's a coincidence. My home is the closest to yours, and I'm very familiar with this area. There are few houses, and this estate was the only unoccupied one. Since you just moved in, it was only natural I'd find you here. So, here I am."
Xia Yu was somewhat surprised by the coincidence. It seemed Wu Hongyi was indeed his neighbor. What a serendipity!
"Ha-ha, then we'll be neighbors. Please take care of us!"
Xia Yu said with a smile.
"It should be mutual care!"
Wu Hongyi corrected Xia Yu's words with a smile, making Xia Yu laugh.
