The morning passed quickly, and at noon, Xia Yu did not return home. Instead, he ordered takeout and continued working diligently in the office.
He thought about informing his parents that he wouldn't be home for dinner due to an evening appointment. However, without a car and no telephone at home, notifying them was quite inconvenient. Given that he had previously mentioned working late at the newspaper office, he assumed they would understand. He decided to just go home early tonight.
Outside, many reporters had already left as Xia Yu hadn't come out. There weren't many reporters left in the vicinity.
However, with so many reporters lingering around the company and some even inquiring about interviewing Xia Yu, employees inside the company communicated and soon everyone knew about the report. Many were shocked by the news.
Even the department heads who knew Xia Yu was involved in stock trading recalled his vague promise from before. Though curious, none dared to bring it up with him directly and hoped their boss wouldn't forget them.
Noticing the fluctuating sentiments among employees, Xia Yu observed but felt reassured as long as the company's work continued to run smoothly. Such matters would eventually settle with time, and if they caused further disturbances, he would address them then.
Around four in the afternoon, Xia Yu planned to head out to buy clothes for his dinner with Liu Tianci. Dressing formally was the least he could do to show respect, as etiquette was important.
He hailed a taxi and headed to Kowloon Commercial City, which had many high-end suit stores where he could find suitable clothing.
After an hour of shopping, Xia Yu bought several suits and a watch worth a few hundred dollars. It wasn't that he couldn't afford luxury brands like Rolex, but it seemed unnecessary at the moment. Although he had the money, it wasn't the right time to spend it on such items.
Moreover, in an era where workers' monthly salaries were only a few hundred dollars, spending a few hundred on a watch was already quite a lot. Given that Hong Kong had many old-brand watch stores where quality watches could be bought for tens of dollars, spending hundreds was a significant amount.
After shopping, Xia Yu left Kowloon Commercial City with several bags and prepared to take a taxi back to the office. Unfortunately, after waiting for five or six minutes, no taxis stopped by.
The taxi he finally caught was rather old, making for an uncomfortable ride. As he sat in the car, the unpleasant smell of second-hand smoke made him frown, and he thought, "It seems I need to buy a car soon. It's really inconvenient without one, especially with such a large company. I'll get a car in the next couple of days."
Resolving to do so, Xia Yu rolled down all the windows to let the outside breeze clear the smoke odor.
Due to heavy traffic, the car moved slowly. As they passed a welfare home, the sound of cheerful children's voices came through the window, causing Xia Yu to look over in surprise.
A group of children surrounded a graceful white figure. Their innocent and joyful smiles made Xia Yu smile as well. Curious about who was making the children so happy, he focused on the white figure among them. She wore a white coat that couldn't hide her delicate, slender figure. Her long, black hair cascaded like a dark waterfall, attracting much attention.
What struck Xia Yu most was the pure and refined aura the girl exuded.
"She must be a beautiful girl, but it's a shame I can only see her back," Xia Yu thought to himself.
As if she heard his thoughts, the girl suddenly turned around, revealing a stunning face. Her skin was as white as snow, and her eyes were like clear water. Her demeanor was elegantly aloof, making one feel entranced and self-conscious.
She resembled a lotus flower, standing gracefully, only to be admired from afar.
Coincidentally, the girl seemed to sense something, lifting her gaze slightly to look in Xia Yu's direction. Their eyes met.
Like a frightened kitten, she quickly looked away, her fair face tinged with a faint pink blush, mixing brightness with shyness.
The gentle lowering of her head was as delicate as a water lily shivering in the cool breeze.
Unfortunately, such beautiful moments are always fleeting. Xia Yu wanted to observe more closely, but the girl said her goodbyes to the children and got into a black sedan.
Xia Yu then noticed that near the white-clad girl were two stern-faced bodyguards who opened the car door for her. After she got in, the car started, but the rear window on the right opened. The girl slightly leaned out, extending her jade-like hand to wave goodbye to the children.
The car then slowly drove off, and as the window rolled up, Xia Yu thought he saw her glance back one last time.
For some reason, Xia Yu felt a strong sense of loss as the car disappeared from view. He didn't catch the license plate number and felt a sudden pang of regret.
Shaking his head slightly, he decided not to dwell on it. After waiting for a bit, his own car started vibrating and made a hissing sound, coming to a halt. Xia Yu looked at the driver.
The driver, with an awkward smile, explained, "Sorry, it's an old problem. I'll get out and fix it. It'll be quick."
Xia Yu was speechless.
"Forget it, I'll get out!"
Losing confidence in the car, Xia Yu was concerned about potential breakdowns or accidents. He left two dollars and got out. The driver, though wanting to keep him, remained silent as Xia Yu walked away.
After getting out, Xia Yu saw the children still playing by the roadside. Thinking of the white-clad girl, he approached and asked, "Kids, what's the name of that sister who was just here?"
"Big brother, are you looking for Sister Ruofu?" asked a little chubby boy with a wary look.
"You silly, you just gave away Sister Lin's name. What if he's a bad person?" said a slightly older girl, covering the boy's mouth and looking at Xia Yu cautiously.
Seeing their interaction, Xia Yu smiled, realizing that although the children were wary, they had unwittingly provided the information he wanted.
"That sister looked a lot like one of my classmates. I didn't expect it to be Lin Ruofu. I haven't seen her in a long time," Xia Yu said with a sincere smile, as if he and the white-clad girl were indeed classmates. He was used to deceiving children from his previous life and didn't feel guilty.
"Oh, you're a classmate of Sister Lin? Big brother, do you like Sister Lin?" asked a little boy with glasses.
Hearing this, Xia Yu paused in his smile. Even young children knew about pursuing someone these days.
"No, I just wanted to say hello since it's been a long time," Xia Yu explained with a smile, crouching down.
"Well, Brother, Sister Ruofu is really nice. She often comes to play with us, buys clothes, tells us stories, and brings us lots of delicious food!" said the chubby boy, licking his lips at the end, seemingly recalling something tasty.
"She really is kind to you," Xia Yu said, patting the chubby boy's head with a smile.
"Yes, yes!"
…
The other children chimed in, clearly agreeing with Xia Yu's words.
"Grandma Director is calling us, Big Brother, we have to go," said the girl, waving goodbye to Xia Yu and heading towards the welfare home.
"Goodbye!" Xia Yu waved back, watching them go. At the entrance of the welfare home, an elderly woman in simple clothes and a kind face waved to the children and glanced at Xia Yu for a moment. Xia Yu smiled and nodded in return.
As he watched the direction where the white-clad girl had left, Xia Yu mused, "Lin Ruofu, as her name suggests, is as pure and elegant as a lotus. I wonder what kind of prestigious family could cultivate such a girl…"
