Prolouge
Jane and I ran off, holding hands and laughing. We were both wearing heels, so we had to be careful not to trip. When we reached the flower field, we plopped down amidst the vibrant flowers. The beautiful lavenders, lilacs, and violets surrounded us, and we lay there, still holding hands.
Once our laughter faded, we sat up and stared into each other's eyes. I slowly placed my hand on her cheek. She glanced at my hand and blushed. "Tori..." she said, her voice shy and soft.
"Jane, I love you...I love you so much." There! I said it! I finally let those words out, the ones I had been so scared to speak. She looked slightly taken aback, her cheeks turning even redder.
"Tori, I love you too...but...what about everyone else? What will we tell them? What will they think—" She was getting ahead of herself again. I didn't understand why she always worried about other people's opinions.
"Jane...why should we care? They don't have to know. Why do strangers' opinions about us matter? Besides, everyone else's way of thinking is so silly. What's the big deal about two women or two men loving each other? If it's pure, true love, does it really matter the gender, race, or background of the person? It's such a cowardly thing to be bothered by as a society.
"Forget about everyone else for tonight, Jane. I want you to just focus on me."
