Don't be fooled into thinking that missions to the human world are all fun and games with free meals and sightseeing.
The procedures required to travel from Soul Society to the human world are extensive, and upon returning, there's a ton of paperwork. Only the greenest of rookies would think it's glamorous; most Shinigami would rather avoid it.
"Well, as you mentioned before, Renka is a female, and Kaien strongly recommended you, saying you're more than capable."
The real reason Ukitake assigned Gin to this task wasn't due to special consideration for Renka or Kaien's recommendation. It was because Ukitake realized Gin was becoming too complacent. As a young, promising member of the squad, he couldn't afford to settle into a comfortable, laid-back routine.
Leaving the Ukitake Manor, Gin wore a troubled expression. He had planned to drink with Rangiku that evening.
Rangiku, with her impressive... 'personality', had entered the Tenth Division around the same time Gin joined the Thirteenth Division.
Recently, with the Tenth Division lacking a captain, many duties fell onto her shoulders, leading her to drown her work frustrations in alcohol.
Rangiku's circle of friends in Soul Society was small, and Gin was one of the few she considered a drinking buddy.
Despite her poor drinking habits and frequent attempts to avoid paying, Gin enjoyed her company. Her... openness often provided delightful surprises.
After completing the tedious procedures, Gin was finally ready to head to the human world.
For the Thirteenth Division, which handled purification duties, traveling to the human world wasn't unusual. In fact, most Shinigami stationed in various cities belonged to the Thirteenth Division.
Shinigami, being composed of spiritual particles, required a Hell Butterfly and the Senkaimon to travel between worlds.
The Senkaimon in Soul Society was a grand gate-like structure, flanked by two towering wooden pillars. However, in the human world, it appeared as a simple wooden sliding door.
Gin didn't feel too pressured about this mission. Despite the potential threat of a Menos Grande, his current strength was more than sufficient to handle such a foe.
However, as he entered the Senkaimon, Gin felt an overwhelming sense of unease.
Minutes later, clutching his Zanpakutō, Gin found himself in a dim corridor, face-to-face with the approaching Kōryū. His expression turned grim.
Using the Senkaimon wasn't without risks. It's a transportation tool connecting two worlds, and any slight miscalculation could lead to trouble—such as ending up in the Dangai.
The Dangai, a space between the human world and Soul Society, was surrounded by temporal currents. Time here flowed at a vastly accelerated rate—2000 times faster than the outside world. A year outside equated to 2000 years inside.
Worse still, the Dangai contained the Kōryū and the Kōtotsu. Any Shinigami encountering these would almost certainly perish.
The Kōtotsu appeared every seven days, serving as the Dangai's "cleaner," eradicating anything in its path. It didn't rely on spiritual pressure and was impervious to attacks.
Aizen could defeat the Kōtotsu likely due to his Hollow powers or the Hōgyoku.
But for Gin, dealing with the Kōtotsu was impossible.
Ending up in the Dangai was already a one-in-a-thousand chance. Encountering the Kōtotsu made it a one-in-ten-thousand chance!
If not for having no connection with the BOSS, Gin would have thought he was being set up.
Releasing all his spiritual pressure, Gin gripped his Zanpakutō and unleashed a high-density spiritual energy attack, imitating the "Getsuga Tenshō." However, the Kōtotsu, as the Dangai's cleaner, absorbed and nullified the attack effortlessly.
Seeing this, Gin attempted to flee, but suddenly, his body froze, and a robotic voice echoed in his mind.
"Detected host in a special spatial environment. Conditions met. Dimensional Travel System activation commencing. System activation in progress: 10%, 20%... Please remain still during activation to avoid unforeseen consequences."
Hearing the voice, Gin felt like cursing. While having a cheat system was good, the timing was terrible, and the forced immobility was even worse.
The Kōtotsu's speed wasn't fast; escaping was possible. But with his body frozen, it seemed he was destined to be devoured.
No one knew what happened to Shinigami consumed by the Kōtotsu. Gin wasn't Ichigo, the story's protagonist with plot armor.
Watching the Kōtotsu approach and the system progress slowly, Gin grew increasingly anxious.
What a lousy cheat! Most transmigrators got theirs in the first few chapters; his took over ten chapters to activate, and at the worst possible moment.
As the Kōtotsu closed in, Gin could only hope the system would activate in time.
