I paced eagerly, awaiting another update from Viviana. She had one of her members who inherited Greed's gift infiltrate the werewolves' pack. None of my clan members had this gift, so I could tell it was rare and very valuable, but when she asked for half a million dollars to complete the task, she assured me it would be money well spent.
They had already killed the two beasts that murdered 43 of my members, though I only sent six vampires after them. The progenies died as a result of their deaths, and that was well worth the money, in my opinion; the intel they could gather was icing on the proverbial cake. Once I awoke, I immediately checked the phone for any updates, but there were none.
James would be coming for his training soon, but I was far too distracted; I would most likely have him try things independently while I supervised from afar, awaiting Viviana's call. I tried to sit down, but I was too antsy. The events over the past several days were culminating to a head. Once James completed his bond with that bitch, everything that I had been working toward would be fulfilled.
I was almost giddy with anticipation. Soon, I would have my own Dhampir, and with that, I would be just as powerful as Viviana and her Shadows. I chuckled maniacally but was interrupted as James entered my office. He said, "I'm here for my training." I smiled, "We're going outside tonight."
I forwarded the calls from my office to my cell phone; I rarely used it, but this was a special occasion. I didn't get along with technology, and I honestly missed simpler times. The advancement of technology made it more challenging to be a vampire. You always had to be worried about being caught on camera nowadays. Technology did have its advantages as well, and I could accept that even if I didn't care for them.
I led James outside and to the courtyard in front of our estate. I had already called in reinforcements, some of the clan's mid-level members. I said, "You will defend yourself from ten of our kind. They have been instructed not to harm you, but they can pin you down. The same is allowed from you. Show me what you can do."
I repositioned myself on the roof of the house so that I could oversee the mock battle. I had instructed the vampires to attack in pairs of two; otherwise, James' hemokinesis ability would have been unfair. These members were descendants of Gluttony, and none of them knew how to control their own unique power, but they were older, so they had developed other advantages.
Still, they should be no match for what James was capable of. I clapped my hands twice to start things off. I watched from a safe distance and clenched the cell phone tightly. The first two vampires approached James with great speed and tried their best to pin him down, but despite James being a young vampire, he was wise beyond his years.
I truly had picked the perfect progeny; he didn't even use his blood manipulation and dodged the simultaneous attacks while grabbing one vampire and slamming him down. The vampire yielded, and James released him. The other came swooping back in from behind, but James turned their momentum against him and pinned him as well.
I lept down and said, "Let's increase the attacks to three at a time; I need you to use your hemokinesis, not just your ability to dodge or your strength." This was child's play for James. I got back to the roof swiftly and clapped my hands once more. The onslaught of the following three vampires seemed more brutal; they wanted to prove their value to me just as much as James did.
This time, James' feet were swept out from under him, but he was able to correct his fall and land on his feet. He bit into his wrist, and I saw the blood flow from his wrist protectively whipping around his right side. This meant he could force all the attacks to come in from one direction, and he was able to thwart them easily. Aside from using his blood manipulation as a defensive measure, I had yet to see him use it against his opponent.
He pinned the three attacking successfully, and they each yielded instantly once he overpowered them. I lept down, "This time, use your hemokinesis offensively, not just as a defense. The remaining five will attack you this time." I returned to the rooftop, and my phone rang. I held up a fist, signaling them all to pause momentarily.
I said, "Hello, Viviana." She corrected me, "Please refer to me as Pride." I didn't understand why I had known her long before she had created her little clan; she even tried to recruit me for a time. "What information has your clan member gathered?" She paused, causing my anticipation to rise.
They are planning an attack, 576 members strong, and we have their hotel arrangements. They are staying in four separate hotels, and some members are staying with a pack located in Black Mountain, not far from where you reside. They are planning on arriving two nights before the full moon, and their stay will end the morning after the night of the full moon.
I paced back and forth on the rooftop as she spoke. That number of mongrel warriors could easily overwhelm us, but we couldn't exactly get up and leave. Pride continued, "We've located Kara's true mate at Alpha Gray's pack house in Montrose, Michigan, and the Ulfric is apparently on his way here because of his brother."
I gasped, "I thought you killed them both?" She replied, "We did; Sloth brought him back; it allows him to see through his eyes, another way to collect information." She paused, "Now he can't shift, and he's practically a vegetable. That's why his brother is supposed to come." I took in the additional information.
I asked, "What do you think?" Pride spoke, "I didn't realize that their numbers had grown so much; with the able-bodied members gathering to attack your residence, we could easily cull many of the members left at the pack houses by dividing and conquering." I thought for a moment. It would be beneficial to cull their future generation. However, it would not benefit my plans to obtain the dhampir I sought for so long.
I sighed and thought some more. I finally said, "So you will use my misfortune to cull their race down even though I'm paying you." She paused, "Vampires are easily made; the vampires your clan loses can be replaced in a matter of weeks. At least the werewolves take nine months to reproduce their pups."
I felt my anger rise inside of me. I hissed, "And what about the creation of a Dhampir." She laughed at my remark, and for the first time, her high-pitched voice irked my nerves. She added, "You don't think you're actually going to be successful, do you?" Had she seen something already that I, myself, was not privy to?
I asked, "What do you mean?" She laughed again, which further enraged me. I hung up the phone. Seething, I clapped my hands to continue with James' training. The five vampires came out from the shadows and attempted to pin James down; I watched him manipulate his blood, grabbing one mid-air and slamming him into the ground.
He dodged three others but was knocked off guard by the fourth. He pulled his blood back to aid him in righting himself. He grabbed the fourth member with his left hand and pressed him into the ground by his throat. He bit into his right wrist and allowed more blood to flow out. It whipped around wildly, providing a 360-degree shield around him.
If I wasn't watching for myself I would have never believed what I saw. A thin thread of blood flew out and returned to him, dragging one of the vampires toward him. He opened the shield formed by his hemokinesis, allowing only his right arm to pass through, and grabbed the vampire before flinging him with such force that he broke the fountain in the center of the courtyard when he made impact.
After seeing the destruction James caused, the remaining two vampires simply yielded as they helped the other member up from the pile of rubble. I lept down for the last time tonight. I applauded, "Very good, James. That's enough training for tonight. Please get cleaned up and fed, then meet me back in my office. There are a few things we need to discuss before you go back to your bitch."
I awaited James in my office and continued to pace. With this new wealth of knowledge, I would be foolish not to use it. I thought of a few different scenarios and brainstormed a few options while the clock ticked. James finally made it back to the office, and I had him take a seat across my desk while I took the seat behind it.
