章節 4: The Match

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across Broadway's Academy pitch. The air buzzed with anticipation as the Broadway Academy and Westwood Academy lined up for the start of the practice match. Marcus could feel his heart pounding in his chest, his eyes scanning the field for any sign of weakness in the opposing team.

As the whistle blew, the game exploded into action. Westwood immediately pressed hard, their players moving with precision and speed. Marcus took his position on the left wing, his eyes darting around as he tried to find a way to break through Westwood's Academy defenders.

Across the field, Alex Williams moved with a grace and confidence that caught the eye. His skill with the ball was undeniable, and he danced around the opposing players effortlessly, drawing murmurs of admiration from the sidelines. It was clear that Alex was someone special, and it didn't go unnoticed by everyone present.

In the stands, a group of scouts from the Carrington training center observed the match intently. They had come to evaluate Alex, who would be joining them in Manchester after the end of the school year, but their eyes occasionally drifted to Marcus as well. Marcus, aware of their presence, felt the pressure mounting. He needed to prove himself, to show that he was just as worthy of their attention, worthy of being signed to a top football club's academy.

The first half of the game was a fierce battle for control with both teams vying for possession. Marcus played with all his heart, using his vision and passing ability to create opportunities for his team. He intercepted passes, made crosses, and delivered precise through balls to his teammates. Yet, every time he glanced over at Alex, he saw a player who seemed to be in a league of his own.

Alex received a pass from Marcus near the center of the final third and quickly maneuvered past two defenders with a burst of speed. His footwork was mesmerizing, and as he approached the penalty area, he feinted to the right making the goalkeeper react before lobbing the ball with his left foot. The shot soared over the goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net, drawing applause from both teams' supporters. Alex celebrated by running towards the corner flag and pumping his fists into the air before his teammates jumped all over him throwing him onto the green.

Marcus felt a pang of envy mixed with admiration. He knew he was good, but Alex's performance was on another level. The scouts from Carrington exchanged nods, clearly impressed by what they were seeing.

As the game continued, Marcus fought to keep his focus. He received a pass from Jamie Moss in midfield and immediately found himself under pressure from Westwood's right-back. Moving the ball slowly toward the defender, he managed to nutmeg the defender and pushed forward, looking for an opening. Spotting a gap, he threaded a perfect low cross to Alex who had left his marker in the dust, who took the shot only to be denied by a brilliant save from the Westwood keeper.

The game ebbed and flowed towards the 72nd minute, with both teams creating chances and defending fiercely. Marcus knew he was playing well. He was beating his markers delivering quality crosses, but he could sense that it wasn't enough. The scouts' attention remained largely on Alex, who continued to dazzle with his skill, vision, and positioning.

In the 82nd minute of the match, Broadway Academy was awarded a penalty. Alex had just received another quality cross from Marcus and was about to head home but he was pushed slightly by the Westwood's number 4 and missed the chance for his side to go two-nill up. But the referee was right in front of it and he blew his whistle pointing to the spot. Marcus stepped up, knowing this was his chance to make a statement. He took the ball and placed it on the spot, he took a deep breath, visualized the shot, and struck the ball cleanly. The ball sailed towards the bottom left corner, but alas, luck wasn't on his side as the Westwood goalkeeper had guessed right, making an acrobatic save, and tipping the ball for a corner.

The final whistle blew, and the match ended in a draw. Both teams had fought hard, and there were moments of brilliance from players on both sides. As the players shook hands and congratulated each other, Marcus couldn't help but feel a sense of disappointment. He had given everything, but he knew that in the eyes of the scouts, it might not have been enough.
