"Elijah," I whisper, "we're in a hospital. What if someone walks in?" My voice cracks slightly. I can't tell if it's because of my nerves or the cold that's been lingering for days. "Someone might get a picture, and we'd be the talk of the city."

Elijah just shrugs, leaning in closer. His eyes are locked on mine, unwavering. "I'm not afraid of what people think, Ella. I don't care."

I shake my head, trying to suppress the flutter in my chest. "You don't actually mean that."

He chuckles softly, the sound low and warm, and his grin stretches wider.

"If someone pointed a camera at me right now," he says, stepping even closer, "I'd kiss you and say the sweetest things I could think of. No hesitation."

My heart skips a beat. I try to hide the blush spreading across my face, but the heat is unmistakable.
