章節 10: The Dead Walk!

"Ugh, my back... Yawn!"

I just woke up. How did that happen? I didn't know, but it took me a while to realize.

"Yawn! Wow, did I yawn twice? Man, that sleep was amazing."

I gradually woke up, opening my eyes slowly and moving my arms to adjust my crooked position, which was definitely causing the back pain.

But sooner or later, I had to remember and realize.

"What? I'm alive?" I placed my right hand over my heart to feel the beats.

My surprise mixed with excitement at not understanding what had happened made me look at my right side, where the severe wound had been.

But there was nothing there. The wound had basically vanished, and there wasn't a drop of blood on my body, clothes, or the ground.

"Holy crap. What happened? Am I really alive? Wow! I'm really alive!" I shouted, jumping like a drunk celebrating an NBA championship.

I was beyond thrilled, more alive than ever. But then, I rushed to the backpack on the ground, crouched down, and opened it to see what was inside. I was surprised to find a radio.

"Ah, Laura. Always thinking of everything."

I grabbed the radio and tuned it, hoping someone would respond.

"Come on. Someone. Anyone."

A sudden synchronization crackle echoed.

Bbrrzz!

Someone came on the line.

"Hello? Can you hear me? My name is Phil. Can anyone hear me?"

"Phil... We're... Where... Are you?" It was Tom's voice, but it sounded too weak to understand, which was very concerning.

"Tom? What happened? Tell me where you are!"

Beep!

"Tom? Hello?" The line went dead, along with my positive thoughts.

But I couldn't waste time. I put the radio in the backpack, zipped it up, and slung it over my back.

As I walked through the city's streets, I was determined to find the group. The streets were as silent as always, increasing my sense of urgency every time. Then I heard a loud rustling sound nearby. I stopped for a moment, trying to identify the source.

"Hmm? Is it a giant rat? That's all I need," I thought, approaching cautiously toward the alley a few meters ahead.

There was nothing in sight, so I kept walking. I reached an intersection with a large avenue and, looking to the right, I saw a boy rummaging through some grocery bags.

He seemed to have found something valuable because he was quickly stuffing items into the bags. The boy looked dirty, with wide, naive eyes.

"Hey, kid. Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you!" I said, trying to sound as friendly as possible. But he just looked at me, grabbed the bags, and ran off.

"Great, now I'm the boogeyman scaring kids," I muttered, starting to chase after him. The kid ran fast, and my exhaustion only grew by the second.

"Wait! I just want to help!" I shouted, but the boy didn't stop. He crossed the street and darted into an alley on the left. "Really? Another alley?"

I was exhausted, but I kept running after him. Suddenly, the boy screamed.

"Help! Help!" He stopped running and turned to face me.

"Help? I need help!" I shouted at him, just before an unexpected trip sent me to the ground.

I hit my head lightly on the ground, making stars dance in my vision. Slowly, I opened my eyes, dazed, and saw who had tripped me.

"It can't be..."

It was Henry.

"Glad to see you're still alive," he said to me with a crooked smile.

Henry. The guy I saw brutally killed days ago. But there he was, as if nothing had happened.

"Oh, crap? Henry? What? What's going on? Did someone drug me while I was sleeping, and I didn't notice? Or am I seeing dead people now?" I was utterly confused as I stood up.

"Who's this guy?" the kid asked Henry, who replied with a laugh, "He's my photographer."

Seriously, I didn't know if I was hallucinating or if it was real.

"Henry, is this real? I saw you get ripped in half, so how are you here? How?"

He smiled brightly, leaning against the wall of one of the houses in the alley, and answered.

"I have no idea. I just opened my eyes, and voila! I'm alive again. Isn't this place amazing?"

It was strange because the same thing had happened to me just now.

"It happened to me," I said dryly, staring at the ground.

"You died too? What killed you?" Henry asked.

"A Gyaku. It looked like a large, abnormal eagle."

He pushed off the wall and started walking down the alley. The boy followed him, and I, still perplexed, asked.

"Where are you going?"

Without looking at me, he continued walking and spoke with his arms raised to the sky.

"Before leaving this place, I need to do what you already know, Phil."

Yeah... I knew what he meant.

"Get proof of the existence of the New World."

"Exactly! Are you coming with me?" Walking backward, he shouted to me as he had gotten further away.

I had to make a decision. Maybe it wasn't the path I wanted most, but I had no choice. Being alone in this place was too big a risk.

"I'll go. I'll keep you company."
