The next morning, Damon was unusually quiet as they sat for breakfast.
Damon's mind was preoccupied with Jessica's strange assumption that he was married. He couldn't shake it off— how had she jumped to that conclusion? And why was it bothering him so much?
He glanced at Jessica, who was seated across the table, and was focused on Emily. Her face was impassive, as if their conversation from the previous night hadn't happened. She didn't look at him, didn't try to engage.
He sighed inwardly. It wasn't worth the effort right now to clear things up. He was too irritated to care. If she was too stubborn or too quick to judge, that was on her.
Damon focused his attention on Emily, who was excitedly chattering about the new doll she had received from Hunter the day before.
"Her name is Sophie, and she has shiny hair like me! We had a tea party last night, Daddy. Can I take her to school?"
