The Journey of Suzuki Kyōi: Turning the Battle Around
As the chaos of the battle raged around him, Kyōi realized that fighting the undead one by one would get them nowhere.
The creatures were climbing out of the pit with relentless force, and for every one they managed to eliminate, it seemed like an infinite number took its place.
With his katana still gripped tightly in his hands and his breath labored, Kyōi surveyed the surrounding chamber.
The rough walls, the ancient wooden mining supports, and the beams that barely held together suggested a way out: use the mine's architecture to block the flow of the undead.
"Maybe it's time to bring all this down," he thought, as his eyes traced the elevated beams and pillars supporting the structure.
Kyōi stepped back, dodging an attack from a skeleton, and shouted to the other mercenaries:
"We need to bring down the ceiling! Strike the wooden supports! If we can block the entrance to the pit, we can stop them!"
Renidori, busy fending off a group of undead, immediately grasped the idea.
"Hit the supports! You heard him!" he yelled to the mercenaries, who without hesitation shifted their focus.
With renewed energy, the group began directing their attacks toward the mine's structural weak points.
Swords hacked at the wooden beams, which creaked under the weight of age and the relentless blows.
Kyōi approached one of the main beams.
With a precise strike from his katana, he weakened it, causing it to partially collapse.
The sound of splintering wood echoed through the chamber, making the ground tremble beneath them.
The undead kept climbing, but with each beam that fell, the number of creatures emerging seemed to lessen slightly.
The plan was working, but they needed to move quickly.
"Hit harder! Bring it all down!" Renidori shouted, as a skeleton lunged at him.
He struck it in the head with his sword, shattering it to pieces on the floor, but another skeleton immediately took its place.
The ceiling of the chamber began to give way.
Stones and debris fell from above, adding to the chaos and confusion.
But Kyōi didn't stop, every strike of his blade was loaded with precision and force.
Every beam he hit weakened to the point of breaking.
Finally, with a decisive blow, one of the main support beams collapsed completely, bringing down part of the ceiling with it.
A massive amount of rocks and rubble fell into the pit, blocking the entrance and burying many of the undead beneath the weight of the structure.
The creatures still outside the pit stopped, as if an invisible command had halted them.
Then, without warning, they collapsed to the ground, lifeless and motionless.
The air filled with an eerie silence.
The group stood still for a moment, their breaths still heavy and their hearts pounding in their chests.
The collapse of the ceiling had stopped the horde, and the battle seemed finally over.
Kyōi slowly lowered his katana, staring at the pit now buried under the rubble.
"We've stopped the horde," he said in a hoarse voice, "but we need to make sure they never emerge again."
Renidori approached, his face marked with exhaustion but also a certain admiration.
"You had a good instinct, Kyōi. Without your command, we'd have been overrun."
Kyōi nodded, but he knew the victory was only temporary.
"We need to find what we came for. The resources are here somewhere, and we need to make sure this place stays sealed."
With the threat of the undead eliminated, the group gathered, ready to continue their search.
But the shadow of what they had faced still lingered in their minds.
The Journey of Suzuki Kyōi: The Awakening of the Undead
As the group relaxed after the collapse of the beams and the burial of the creatures in the pit, an unsettling silence filled the chamber.
For a moment, the sound of heavy breathing and pounding hearts was the only thing audible.
"We did it..." murmured one of the mercenaries as he lowered his sword.
"We've stopped that cursed horde."
But the torches still flickered, casting long, uneven shadows on the walls.
Kyōi stared at the pit now covered with rubble, trying to convince himself that the battle was over.
But even in the silence, something inside him warned him otherwise.
He felt the air thick and heavy with tension, as if something was preparing to emerge.
Then, without warning, a faint hiss was heard, followed by a deeper sound, like breathing coming from the depths of the mine.
The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly, almost imperceptibly, but enough to startle some of the mercenaries.
A cold shiver ran down Kyōi's spine.
The group of mercenaries looked around in panic, unable to believe their eyes.
Renidori was the first to notice it. "What was that?" he asked, his voice low but laden with concern.
Before anyone could answer, a familiar, ominous sound broke the air: a dry creak, like bones moving.
"But how is that possible?" one of the mercenaries shouted. "We took them down—how are they standing again?"
Kyōi's eyes immediately darted to one of the undead lying still nearby.
Its bones began to tremble, and then, like a reactivated machine, the creature moved.
One by one, the skeletons' bodies began to contort.
Their empty eye sockets lit up once more with that sinister greenish glow.
Bones creaked, and soon the creatures were slowly rising, as if the collapse had never happened.
"This can't be..." whispered one of the mercenaries, fear clearly etched on his face.
Kyōi tightened his grip on his katana, his expression growing more serious.
"This isn't normal," he said in a low voice, laden with tension.
"Someone... or something... is controlling them and regenerating them."
As the undead rose again, their skeletal mouths emitted a shrill wail, and the group realized they were about to be overrun once more.
And as the undead slowly stood up again, Kyōi's group watched in stunned disbelief, unable to comprehend how they could still be moving despite the collapse and destruction.
The creatures, with rigid but unstoppable movements, were getting back on their feet, like puppets guided by an invisible force.
Their empty eye sockets, glowing with that sinister green light, seemed to be aimed directly at Kyōi and his companions.
