As we settled into the apartment, the tense atmosphere began to ease, just a little. The weight of what had just happened still hung in the air, but there was also a need to reset, to take a breath. Lydia and Isabel exchanged glances before Lydia suddenly clapped her hands together, startling both of us.

"Well, we can't plan on an empty stomach!" Lydia declared. Her voice had a forced cheerfulness to it, as if she was trying to lighten the mood. "We need to eat something."

Isabel raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced by Lydia's sudden burst of enthusiasm. "You mean... you want to cook?"

Lydia grinned. "How hard can it be? We've fought vampires, survived explosions, and tracked down dangerous people. Cooking dinner is nothing in comparison!"

I wasn't sure what was worse: the looming threat of more attacks or the idea of Lydia and Isabel trying to cook. "Maybe we should—"
